The following information is useful whether you intened to post to SSB or just read it. If you do intend to post, please read the charter at http://www.mindspring.com/~frites/charter.htm or http://www.phszx81.demon.co.uk/charter.html The charter isn't long or difficult. The most important part is that it prohibits personal or commercial ads in the newsgroup.
There are a number of FAQs relevant to SSB. They get posted to newsgroups on various schedules. They can also be found on Web pages.
*THE* FAQ is the SSB FAQ. This FAQ contains lots of good information about what BDSM is, how it's practiced, and what safety precautions to take. It's available and most up-to-date at the author's own website: http://www.unrealities.com/adult/ssbb/faq.htm It's composed of many web pages so, if you'd prefer to read it offline, the regularly-updated text version (all 200K of it) is at http://www.magenta.com/~spectrum/faqssb.txt A less-often-updated version is available via ftp from rtfm.mit.edu directory /pub/faqs/soc-subculture/bondage-faq/ The FAQ is also scheduled to be posted to SSB on the first and the fifteenth day of each month.
The "Welcome to Alt.Sex.Bondage" is a valuable document about posting to the SSB newsgroup. Though written for ASB, it applies almost verbatim to SSB. It can be found at: http://www.mindspring.com/~frites/wel.htm
If you wish to reply to a post, here's some guidelines on what and how to quote: http://www.mindspring.com/~frites/repl.htm
The SSB charter prohibits personal ads in this newsgroup. There are many locations where personal ads are acceptable. See http://www.mindspring.com/~frites/pers.htm for a list of newsgroups and web pages where you can place your ad.
Whether you post or not, it can be helpful to have a copy of the SSB acronym list. It can help you figure out what's being talked about when various abbreviations and acronyms are in use. It's at http://www.mindspring.com/~frites/abbr.txt
The SSB Diplomatic Corps (SSB DC) web page is at http://www.planetarydefense.org/dipcorps/
General netiquette guidelines are contained in RFC 1855. This is available, among other places, at http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1855.html
If you're planning to mung your Email address to prevent spam, http://members.aol.com/emailfaq/mungfaq.html provides good advice on the right way to do it.
One common question is, "where can I host adult web sites?" http://www.madylarian.com/adulthosts.htm contains a list of both free and pay locations that are considered adult/kink friendly.
There are a number of web sites that list group and munch information by geographical area. One of them is http://www.bdsm-education.com/munch.html
Finally, for those looking for medical/theraputic/law professional help, the Kink Aware Professionals Referrals list can be found at http://www.bannon.com/kap
