It seems to me to be legitimate to debate whether society should pay
for self-inflicted handicaps. The biggest one is smoking with obesity
a less serious one. Or how about those who go in for extreme sports
and then society must rescue them or pay for their injuries. There are
probably other self-inflicted handicapps that I haven't thought of yet.
Should they pay more for health insurance? Or pay for their own
medical care?

Before assessing any costs, the role of government and industry must be
assessed. For decades, government subsidized tobacco farmers, even after
the dangers of tobacco were knowm, and tobacco companies knew the dangers
and supressed it.

I don't know about land; but in coastal waters, boaters in distress must pay
to be rescued.

Is your own lifestyle without fault, Connie? Do you abjure animal fats,
trans fats, and high fat dairy products? All of which have been cited as
contributing to onset of various cancers and heart and artery disease.
