I don't think Jane is too mature for a 14 yr old. too bad sassy is dead,
eh? isn't there a young girls feministish mag? i want to say "new
moon"? I'm not sure what age they're aimed at though.

i would not buy her 17 unless you want to prep her for cosmo.

General Guidelines: All material should be pro-girl and focus on girls,
women, or female issues. New Moon was created by girls and women for girls
who want their voices heard and their dreams taken seriously. It is edited
by and for girls ages 8-14. New Moon takes girls very seriously; the
publication is structured to give girls real power. The final product is
a collaboration of girls and adults. An Editorial Board of girls aged 8-14
makes final decisions on all material appearing in the magazine.

So, unfortunately, she is just at the upper edge of the age group the
magazine is aimed at.

Girls are really getting into manga, also. These are Japanese comic books with
female heroines.

Comic books are considered magazines, and my daughter was very happy
with the Marvel comic subscription I got her when she was younger.
Marvel actually has =two= comic books based on Matel's "Barbie" doll.

I personally can't think of a magazine that would be a direct
alternative to stuff like Cosmo Girl. I think the point may be that
girls (and women) have interests that are wider than "being a
girl/woman" -- whatever that means. So I find it hard to imagine a
magazine just for girls/women that was "feminist" per se, unless it was
*about* feminism, and I don't get the impression that's what you're
looking for.

I mean, if this were a 14 YO boy, would you be trying to get him a
magazine about "being a boy"? I doubt it. You'd probably get him s.t.
relating to one of his interests. Similarly, for this girl, I'd go for
a magazine that was issue-oriented. Is she into reading and writing?
Then maybe try Cicada -- a literary magazine that strikes me as
appropriate for teenagers. Music? Mojo (it's not as focused on T&A as,
say, Rolling Stone). Politics or social justice? Then maybe the other
post-er's suggestion of Mother Jones (though that may be too depressing
for a kid that age). Etc.

My library has a slew of magaines for kids of all ages that I have
never heard of. Maybe browse there and ask the kids' librarian?
