Can anybody tell me what the position is if
one wants to import a car to South Africa and
register it? Who can do so, what restrictions
are there, what does one have to do, what
taxes and duties are payable and how much
does it cost etc.?

I have looked at the Department of Transport
web site (http://www.transport.gov.za) but
couldn't find anything there, perhaps somebody
has a URL or some info/experience?

Many thanks in advance,
David

Don't bother.

Unless you have a really good reason it isn't worth it.

They'll give you thousands of forms to fill in, take months to clear it
and charge you a bomb (unless you argue convincingly a number of times
to different officials).

SA has a car industry and is extremely protective of it - so they really
don't want you to import cars. So it is made particularly difficult to do.

If you are working with the Customs people in Cape Town, I was told by
an importer, don't ever try to get anything done after 10:00 am on a
Friday - they are off down the pub then and, if they return, are in a
filthy mood.

I did import a car. I managed to keep the cost down, but it was a most
unpleasant experience and certainly not worth the hassle.
