 | Just had some acquaintances come back from South African to which they told me the correct term to use is "South Afrikaan"
Is this a "Potato, potahto, Tomato, tomahto, Let's call the whole thing off" kind of thing?

The terminology that you are referring to originates from one sector of the South African community that are Dutch descended, and was evolved to give them a seperate identity from the European Dutch.
South African is an English term for a person originating from South Africa. South Afrikaan sounds like an attempt at Afrikaans but it does not seem to be correct. For starters one would use the Afrikaans word for south which is "suid", as in "Suid Afrikaanse"
One could also use words from one of the many other languages that exist alongside Afrikaans - "Umzantsi Afrika" - "Afrika Uborwa" etc. (The other coins in my purse are in Engels or amaBuono so I cannot quote any others)

My mate..... TWO (2) [<----- in case you can't understand the terminology] different folks now explained this to(as opposed to 2) concept to(not 2) you. If you have not yet been able to figure out the bloody difference I suggest you rather translate the whole thing into Sudanese (the Biafran dialect no less!!) As English does NOT seem to be your mother tongue!!!!!

Okay, so what I explained earlier didn't exactly clarify it for you? In South Africa, we do not refer to something as "South Afrikaan" as that is mixing languages and one must refrain from doing that (get's confusing for some folks). Something is indeed "South African" and NOT "South Afrikaan." If you wanted to say this in Afrikaans, something would then be "Suid-Afrikaans" as this is the way it is said in the Afrikaans language.
That alright?

 | Thank you for your help. The posts following my original were all attempts at replying to the second post by ighude.
I've been around people from South Africa, white and black, European and indigenous; I had never heard them refer to something as being South Afrikaan.
When speaking with our acquaintances, if I would imply something as being South African, I would be corrected as to say South Afrikaan. I had thought they were former rednecks only trying to be sophisticated Baptist missionaries now.

It is widely know that you are guilty of committing Hadath(*) in the Mosque on Friday night . You should not make matters worse by perpetrating hibn al flookdapoor baasstud on terraferty. Say your Ay Yamna Silliduwers now so that Allah may smile on you and once again hear your supplications.
(*) Hadath: The woefully sinful act of farting in a holy place.

South Africa = country South African = of RSA or citizen of RSA (as in "This product is South African;"He's South African")
Afrikaans version:
Suid-Afrika = country Suid-Afrikaans = of RSA ("Dit is Suid-Afrikaans") Suid-Afrikaner = citizen of RSA ("Hy is 'n Suid-Afrikaner")
Hope this helps

I would agree with that and let us not forget that there is also the home grown variety which is SouthAfricoon. This is more commonly used in certain circles that are better known for their horse riding ability.
Then there is the UK and European variety which is simply just SAffers .............
