Hi,

I wonder if anyone knows of a good source of second hand microscopes
in the UK? I am looking for a nice Leitz or Zeiss microscope that I
can use to study details of spore-producing structures in lichens. (I
can supply more details of requirements if it is of interest to
anyone).

All the best,

Joe

Hi again,

I thought I might post a short summary of my findings on this subject,
since I had a some off-band replies. The following is a compiled list
of links to suppliers who regularly or occasionally sell second-hand
microscopes or microscopy accessories (these links are not generally
intended as recommendations):

http://www.ebay.co.uk - with all the usual caveats.

http://www.usedmicroscopes.co.uk - being the second-hand goods website
of Brunel microscopes - probably the best-known UK suppliers for the
amateur microscopist.

http://www.microscopesplus.co.uk - another big supplier that does some
second-hand stuff.

http://www.msac-uk.co.uk - website of Microscopy Supplies and
Consultancy Ltd. , a small business based in Fife, Scotland who
sometimes have used equipment for sale. I have just bought an Ortholux
II from these guys and I'm very pleased with both the instrument and
the service from MSAC.

http://www.henrybutcher.com - auction off industrial clearances and
have microscopes from time to time.

http://www.gandmtools.co.uk - a shop in Kent that sometimes has
microscopes.

http://www.abromicroscopen.nl - OK, so not actually in the UK at all,
but not far and they have a much bigger range than anyone in the UK.
Furthermore, they say that they have supplied several microscopes to
the UK without problems and that carriage is free if you use their
courier service.

Thats it. If I've missed anyone out please email me or post a reply.
Thanks to Chris Brady, Malcom Stewart and David Walker.

Cheers,

Joe

I assume you've checked out Brunel Microscopes for starters? Unfortunately
they've prettied up their webpage and it's a lot slower than hitherto.

Yes, I have. In fact I bought a very nice ex-demo stereo scope from
them quite recently. But they don't have anything suitable for my
present requirement - worth keeping an eye on though.

Cheers,

Joe
