WHITE PAPER
Toward Nanomaterials by Design: A Rational Approach for Reaping Benefits in the Short and Long Term
Foresight Institute has historically been focused on longer-tem molecular nanotechnology. As we move into our new phase we are expanding our focus on identifying the tools and steps in the near-term that are leading towards advanced nanotechnology. Scott Mize, President of Foresight Institute, wrote this white paper in partnership with Accelrys Software as a small step in explaining the strategies that nanotechnology companies must adopt to most effectively discover, develop, and manufacture new products.
Please follow this link to order a complimentary copy of this paper. http://www.accelrys.com/science/publications/pub_mize_nano.php
Foresight Institute would like to acknowledge Accelry Software , Inc for their support of this white paper, and in particular, Dr. Scott Kahn, Dr. Gerhard Goldbeck-Wood, Stephen Warde, Michael Francis and Susan Engels.. http://www.accelrys.com/

NEWS
BLUE RIBBON PANEL
Christine Peterson, Vice President of Foresight, joins other nanotechnology experts on the Blue Ribbon Task Force on nanotechnology, a joint federal-state venture to benefit Silicon Valley and promote California as a national and worldwide center for research, development and the commercialization of nanotechnology. US Representative Mike Honda (D-San Jose) and California Sate Controller Steve Westly (D) will serve as Co-Chairs of the Blue Ribbon Panel.

ANIMATION CHALLENGE GRANT:
Visualizing nanotechnology and nanosystems, in particular, is a major challenge in communicating the power of this technology.
Thanks to Foresight Institute member donations large and small the completion of "Productive Nanosystems: from Molecules to Superproducts," a computer-generated animated short film is in progress.
This four-minute film is a collaborative project of animator and engineer, John Burch, and pioneer nanotechnologist, Dr. K. Eric Drexler. The film depicts an animated view of a nanofactory and demonstrates key steps in a process that converts simple molecules into a billion-CPU laptop computer.
We anticipate the animation to be complete in early 2005. For a preview of the animation click on the links below:

Thanks to Mark Sims, President of the nano-CAD software company, Nanorex, for donating $10,000 as a matching grant toward the animation completion. For more information about Nanorex send an email to info@nanorex.com.

FORESIGHT INSTITUTE SPONSORS MPRIZE
In 2005 Foresight institute will continue to focus on how advanced nanotechnology will solve major challenges facing humanity. One of these challenges is extending the healthy human life span.
Foresight has joined 100 other sponsors and donors in support of the MPrize, sponsored by The Methuselah Foundation. In November 2004, the first MPrize was awarded to Dr. Stephen Spindler, leader of the first experiment to achieve rejuvenation in middle age mice. Details follow this link: http://www.methuselahmouse.org/

EVENTS
WEBEX EVENTS
In 2005, Foresight Institute will host several WEBEX events. Our first, Foresight 2005, is scheduled for January 20, 2005 at 10 PST/1 EST.
We will send an email about registration details and agenda after the first of the year, but wanted you to know about these events will be.
Foresight 2005 will be open to all individuals on our email list and will focus on our new initiatives in 2005. The initiatives include the Foresight Nanotechnology Challenges, our Technology Roadmap program, and the enhancement of our Prize program.
Other WEBEX events in the future will include Senior Associate "Town Hall" meetings to guide Foresight Institute as it works for the beneficial implementation of nanotechnology. To be included in the Town Hall events, consider becoming a Senior Associate. http://foresight.org/holiday/index.html

Spaghetti with Real Italian Meatballs
If you don?t have an expendable bambino on hand, you can use a pound of ground pork instead. The secret to great meatballs, is to use very lean meat.
1 lb. ground flesh; human or pork 3 lb. ground beef 1 cup finely chopped onions 7 - 12 cloves garlic 1 cup seasoned bread crumbs ˝ cup milk, 2 eggs Oregano basil salt pepper Italian seasoning, etc. Tomato gravy (see index) Fresh or at least freshly cooked spaghetti or other pasta
Mix the ground meats together in a large bowl, then mix each of the other ingredients. Make balls about the size of a baby?s fist (there should be one lying around for reference). Bake at 400°for about 25 minutes - or you could fry them in olive oil. Place the meatballs in the tomato gravy, and simmer for several hours. Serve on spaghetti. Accompany with green salad, garlic bread and red wine.
