 | Hi All,
I'm a person that likes coming up with ideas but due to a lack of scientific knowledge I don't know if what I think of is plausable or has been looked into already. I've been looking for somewhere to maybe bounce around a few ideas.
This particular idea was for propulsion. Would it be possible to project a magnetic field ahead of an object to effectively pull the object along? I know theres the whole for every action there is an equal opposite reaction. But if the magnetic field was being projected ahead of the craft and perhaps have another field or magnetic alloy at the front of the craft could it act like hanging a carrot in front of a donkey?
I figure even if an idea is silly or even stupid it can spark ideas for others so why not share it...

Generally speaking, energy cannot neither be created nor destroyed. Power is the rate of energy conversion. Example, an electric motor uses electrical power and converts it into mechanical power but consumes more electrical power than it produces mechanical power, the remainder is largely converted into heat.
A magnet is not a source of energy per se, otherwise we'd all use magnets alone to power everything. So where's the energy to come from?

 | Hi Darkling,
How do you propose to project a magnetic field? Induction might work, but what is the force counteracting the magnetic field to propel your craft? Another magnetic field with reverse polarity? Any ideas?

 | Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies, good to know someone does exist out there :)
Actually when the idea popped into my head I did what every good geek should do, I googled it :) I came up with a few sites that seem to use some kind of "projected" magnetic field. (one being http://www.gmw.com/electromagnets/Miniature/5201/5201.html) But as I said I'm not exactly the most technical person so I can only look at what technology is potentially available. As for counteracting the force of the field, would a reversed polarity field around the object help? Wouldn't it need counteracting as well? Or would it work better if one side of the field around an object was stronger?
Obviously the kind of magnetic field used is going to have to be generated by something. I would say an electromagnet would be the best bet. As for powering it, take your pick from solar (may not be enough to generate a decent field) but anything from a fuel cell to a nuclear reactor could potentially power it. It depends on what sort of power requirements you have of course.
