Does your newsreader order threads? You must often walk back up
a tree of replies to understand the context. It is not desirable
to quote a whole post when you are replying only to part of that
post. However, if you delete parts of a post, it is courteous to
indicate where the "snipped" or deleted parts were. Look at
Mike's post, three up from yours.
