 | Tonight we looked up at the moon and noticed a hazy ring around it, many moons in diameter. I guess it has something to do with our atmosphere. I just want to know what that ring is called, assuming it has a name.

It's called a Moon halo and it's a well understood phenomenon. This ought to give you a start:
