You should do some more research into that subject to more appropriately comment on it. A mental illness is the term used to describe when a person goes 3 or 4 days straight with no sleep, where under this extreme over-exhaustion the vision is impaired, the hearing is physically impaired and more. But, none of this can make a person break the law.
Going without sleep for days (which I can assume you do on a weekly basis) DOES NOT constitute a mental illness. And being "mentally ill" does not (usually) make a person commit crimes - it impairs their ability to understand their actions or the consequences. I still believe though, that if a mentally ill person commits a crime, they should pay the same price as a "sane" person. They will probably NEVER become "mentally well" and should be kept out of the general society.
Mental illness is a temporary condition any person can experience by going days and days straight with no sleep. Any person can get confused or over-exhausted, but he doesn't have to break the law. A person commits a crime by choice, by harboring anger and hatred and then choosing to commit a crime. Any books or documentaries teaching an illness can make a person break the law should be banned.
Hmm... your mental illness seems to be permanent.
There are well over 100 "certified" mental illesses - It is when your brain is "sick" (just like your heart can become sick or your lungs can become sick). Most mental illnesses can be "controlled" (never cured) with medication and therapy BUT usually the person is so "crazy" - they don't know they are "crazy" and don't take the medication/get the therapy. This is where the Scandinavian countries (and maybe others) get it right. Lock them up and treat them. None of this American Civil Liberties SHIT - no, they DO NOT have the "right" to wander the streets talking to themselves - we have a responsibility to treat them, even if it means locking them up and forcing the medication down their throats.
