Hello

I have recently bought a new 2004 NP V8 8.1m2 sail and am now looking
for a 490 mast to go with it. NP obviously recomend a Matrix (nothing
on model X3, X5, X7 or X9). However, since my budget is limited I am
wondering what would be best - a 2004 NP X5 (75%, 2.3kg) or a 'better'
(read 100%) mast from less known brand (like YES or Pro line).

I can get an older (think it is 2001) YES Racing (100%, 1,8kg) at
around the same price as the X5 or maybe the slightly more expensive
2002 YES Formula 100 (100%, 1.9kg). Or maybe a new Pro line 100% Race.

Which should I go for?

The rig will be used for freeracing/freeride (probably with a
Hypersonic 111). I weigh 70kg (~155#).
Hope someone can give some sort of advice.

I think that decision should depend on performance. The Prydes use a bend
that verges on flex top (about 15%). If you know the bends of those other
masts you may find one that's close, but more likely they will be about 12%.
There is a pronounced difference between a 12% and a 15% in terms of the
induced draft and head looseness. If its at all possible I'd try before
buying.

Also consider that the 1.8 kg mast will not be as durable as the 2.3 and
that the Matrix mast will feel light where it counts ie at the top.

You may get a more definitive response if you post a query on the NP Maui
forum.

Kim,

Since you won't be doing much hardcore racing, i think you can
easily get away with not using the recommended mast, which it appears
you don't plan on doing anyway. that said, go for the higher
percentage carbon mast. 9times out of ten, the higher percentage is
going to sail better, and obviously has the added benefit of being
lighter.

plus, if you buy new, you might get the advantage of a warranty,
although not every company offers one.

i sail on a VERY limited budget, (i.e., NO budget) and that's probably
what i would do.

have fun on the hypersonic. they can be a real blast
in flat water. a little bit of a challenge if it picks up.
