Have digital camera will travel....John Anderson caught a few of us hovering

Alan,

Had some fun sailing that day, even if it was only 4.7 for the big guys.
Good job on deciding which photo's to post. Good enough to show the
conditions, but not so great that the North enders would want to come up and
join us. We can't keep the awesome conditions in Hatteras a secret, but as
long as we don't post the good shots, maybe we'll be able to keep the crowds
down. Thanks again to John Anderson for bringing his photo gear to the
beach.

Nice, thanks for the vicarious kool-aid squirt.

We need a someone with some deep glass at our venues. Our rinky dink digital shots pale in
comparison.

Alan, you headin' south this weekend?

Wow, I didn't even think about heading down your way. This would be a good
weekend for it. Looks like some kind of west wind tomorrow and NW on Sunday.
I went ahead and lined up a weekend in the mountains with the girlfriend.
Looking like snow...

Wha...wha...WHAT! Did you just take your glove off and slap us in the
face with it? ;-)

We'll I'm going to try and do more. I've started packing my digital
vid recorder with me on my trips now, so I'll try and get some
footage. Also would like to get a better digital camera. I have an
older Cannon Elph, but no way getting shots way out. Thought about
the water housing so I could ride out with it. Else, will try and
look at the Cannon EOS Rebel (not the 20D like yours, the next lower
model).

Don't get too high of expectations, as it will take some time to work
out! :-) Could never beat you in the arms race... ha ha ha Anyway
have a lot of research I need to do before I get started. I don't
want to spend an arm and a leg, and then give up my first (and only)
born! :-)

Hi Bri,
We still have an older Canon Elph...it's Deb's now...she keeps it in her
purse, usually...I had the housing for it, too...great little digicam...

Those are some cool digicams!

I know you have the Canon 20D, but did you check out the Panasonic
DMC-FZ15 w/12x optical zoom (35mm - 420mm equivalent), listing out at
$499.95? 4Megapixal isn't bad at all.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=344819&is=REG

Wonder how that lens would compare to the EOS Rebel and having to buy
a separate lens?

Hey you have all the gear wardog !

Hi Tom ,
Kewl shots...you totally made my point...
Heaps of low tech options out there that produce satisfactory to great
images, I've got watershots from 20 years ago using the film based
Minolta Weathermatic...it requires minimal effort to get digital
images/vid into your 'puter and there are free hosts galore...we're
living in the digital age...and as I said before, the equipment has
advanced tremendously and the price has come down...
It's more of an issue with people putting out the minimal effort, to
illustrate their session reports...some of us have standards...
I hear the word "E P I C" used way too loosely, IMO...
I'll still L@@k at almost anything that somebody takes the effort to
post , if it has to do with water sports...even some terra sports...
Hell, even politics...;-) http://www.jibjab.com

I look at it and move on, if it's not impressive to me...don't really
understand the critics in the peanut gallery that don't throw down with
content, but are the first to throw stones...

How did they get that shot?!?!:
http://www.dv.com/xtremevideo/magazine/xcams_1.1.html

The mainstream equipment producers are jumping into it now...
This new Samsung SC-X105 looks kewl...and with only an $800 price tag...

http://www.letsgodigital.net/en/news/articles/story_2369.html
http://www.samsung.com/PressCenter/PressRelease/PressRelease.asp?seq=20050105_0000089662

The SC-X105 features a durable, rubberized body that is water resistant
and built to withstand harsh conditions. The pocket-size chassis and
streamlined design provide maximum portability for the modern
“on-the-go” lifestyle fitting directly into pockets, backpacks and other
athletic gear. An extra sports camera module provides hands-free
shooting capability and can be mounted on a helmet or other stable
surface for extreme-sports recording.

“Samsung understands that today’s customers lead adventurous lives and
they want to capture every second of it on video,” says Claude Frank,
Director of Digital Audio/Video Products, Samsung Electronics America.
“The SC-X105 is the first video camera of its kind. We developed it to
record every thrill, even in rugged conditions.”

The SC-X105 epitomizes Samsung’s reputation for innovation in the field
of digital convergence technology. The camera features 10x Optical Zoom
with a 680K Movie Optimized CCD lens for superior color precision and
image detail. In addition to producing sharp, realistic movie footage,
the SC-X105 allows users to capture digital stills at 720 x 480 and 1280
x 960 resolution.

The SC-X105 combines innovative design and pro-caliber video capture
capabilities with Samsung’s latest usability enhancements. The Instant
Power ON option means that users never have to worry about missing
crucial moments of footage waiting for the device to warm up. When
Instant ON Mode is selected, the camera becomes ready-to-shoot 0.9
seconds after pressing the button. And Samsung has taken the guesswork
out of managing battery power with an up-to-the-minute battery arc
display that lets users know exactly how much recording/playback time
they have left.

The SC-X105 also incorporates all the features consumers expect from
Samsung’s quality camcorders. A two-inch 211-pixel color LCD screen
allows video playback and still image viewing. The Image Stabilizer
function compensates for slight shaking movements caused by an unstable
position and ensures smooth footage even in suboptimal conditions. 512
MB of built-in memory and an MPEG4 recording option help users maximize
the amount of footage they can capture before downloading their movies.
MPEG4 recording offers the additional advantage of allowing users to
share their files quickly via e-mail.

The SC-X105 will be available in March 2005, with an MSRP of $799.99.

I decided not to go with the wireless helmet cam system...
I prefer surfing in areas out of view of cars and wet bikes...
http://www.eatmydirt.com.au/helcam/hel-cam/surfer-cam.htm
http://www.helmetcameras.com.au/index.htm

The helmetcam part is less than 1/2 the cost of the whole system...
You have to have a recording device...I ended up killing a whole flock
of birds with one stone...

I was going to buy a MP3 player anyways, but also wanted a unit to
organize and show digital slideshows...looked at the new ipod photo for
about 10 seconds...it's a toy compared to the Archos AV480, and it costs
the same...the Archos can hold 800,000 images, 1200 hours of music,
and/or record/play up to 4 1/2 hours of video on it's 80 gig hard
drive...plus, do a whole lot more...and it's only 5" x 3" x 1"...
Shows up on your 'puter as an external hard drive...
Firewire would have been nice for file transfer...but, USB 2.0 will
suffice...

http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040910.gtarchossep10/BNStory/TechReviews/

If you don't need to record video, I would have prolly bought the new
Epson P-2000 multimedia storage viewer...the CF slot is nice for dumping
shots when your cards fill up, without needing to have a laptop along
on the trip...
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/epsonp2000/

Hard to believe that the Appleheads settled for so little, for so much,
with their hype-od$...

The Samsung sounds cool.

No you got me thinking. My main problem with buying a camera with
deep lens is......who in the hell is going to man/women the camera to
capture the session....which you pointed out earlier. Someone has to
sacrifice some water time :-) Tthe picture gallery that Alan
posted, well John Anderson takes time to take pictures because he has
a side biz. That is why he sacrifices.

Now thinking about passing on a high end digital camera and expensive
lens to get the far away shots and maybe just buy a digi recorder
(something like the Samsung) so that I can snap photos and take video
on the water. Possibly helmet/board/boom/mast mount?? That way you
don't have to worry about who will take the pictures! If I happen to
be sitting on shore, I'll just bust out my other digital
recorder/tripod setup and capture the others while taking a break.

Man, my head is spinning with all of these choices and technology!
Thanks for sharing those links!!!!

This is exaclty why I hardly shoot anymore. I got good enough to sail
in the good conditions. I have a 300mm f2.8 that needs some attention.

Wardog,

I read the globetechnology review and it didn't say anything about
recording video (other than off the TV with wires). So how are you
going to use this thing to take video???

Thanks,
Cliff

Hi Cliff,
The Archos has several A/V connections...the Sony lipstick cam plugs
into a video input:
http://www.archos.com/download/spec_sheets/AV400_specs_en.pdf
http://www.viosport.com/images/ourgear/details_ach2o_cam.jpg

AV connections: Composite Video/Earphone/Line Out jack. Built-in
microphone and speaker. TV cradle to connect to TV with analog
audio/video In & Out to RCA jacks, S-video In, and IR receiver for
remote and IR emitter for tuner control, SCART In &
Out for European version. Travel audio-video kit in option to record
audio and video analog source on the move.

http://www.viosport.com/images/ourgear/details_ach2o_kit.jpg

Here's the user interface:

This is basically what's going on:
http://www.skullcamz.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=details&prodID=352
http://www.bulletcam.com/images/waterpack2.JPG

I'm working with Dan at http://www.helmetcamera.com because he has a
waterproof quick disconnect, made of nickel plated brass...that way I
can disconnect the helmet that has the Sony ExView waterproof camera
and 12" pigtail, from the waterproof box housing the Archos and the
battery pack...
I plan on having custom length line sets, for different mast/board mounts...

This is one of the kewlest and hottest devices on the market...just
released from Archos...Pocket Media Assistant...PMA...

The Pocket Media Assistant PMA400 is the the first Linux®-based 30GB HDD
device allowing you to record directly from TV, listen to music, browse
the Internet and stay connected, for entertainment or productivity
anytime, anywhere. A new generation of ARCHOS smart portable devices,
the PMA400 combines full audio and video capabilities, WiFi connectivity
and a personal information manager in one slim, pocket-sized device.

If I didn't already have my Kyocera smart phone/PDA, I'd prolly get the
Archos PMA...

Portable recdot monitoring device...;-)

Now I can upload digital images/video to my server from my mobile
windsurfing office, when we're on the road...
