In 20+ years of wavesailing on the gulf coast of Florida, I've confined
my wavesailing to Lide Beach in Sarasota. I see that there's some
killer NW winds hitting the area this weekend and am wondering where
would be a great place to sail WITH OTHER PEOPLE? (most times I sail,
I'm the only one out at Lido - ok, there are usually some dolphins out
too)

Flights are cheap ($250) and it's snowing like mad up here in
Wisconsin, so a little two day getaway to get some waves would be worth
it. I'VE GOT CABIN FEVER! ;-)

I'm planning on loading up the Evo and heading down but would like to
hook up the local wavesailing crew in the area. Please advise!
Thanks!

Dave,
Sometimes some of the miami sailors head over to wiggins pass
on the west coast. it's a bit of a drive south from tampa, however. I'd
head for pass-a-grille. If it's warm enough up on the panhandle, we
will be wave sailing at cape san blas. but a dartcasted low of 24 is
discouraging.

Hi Dave,
You should cross post that on the Aerotech forum...

Did you see the pic from last weekend titled "Location: some place in
florida"?...maybe someone will let you in on their secret spot...;-)

Heck, John pretty much spelled it out...beans are all over the place...;-)

> Waves were up to 10 feet (3meters) at their peak and rides were at least 100 meters long and sometimes double that. Very nice day. Wind was 20 degrees offshore from the NNW. Port jumps starboard rides. Too bad it was a weekday. There were only about 5 sailors out at Patrick Air Force Base. And two up at Banana River Resort. Wind was 12-14 on the inside so getting out was not easy. Once outside midway thru the break, it filled in at about 16-18 with a couple of gusts around 20.

> Tuesday the 18th 6.2 Charge sideshore with 10-12 foot waves another great day. I am officially toast for the next couple of days. Fantastic conditions and lots easier for more sailors. Shared waves with about six others today. Great fun.

Low temps don't bother me. It's either I go to Florida for some
sailing, or head to Tahoe for some snowboarding! ;-)

Though it is funny when everyone is out in their drysuits, and I'm in a
2/3 spring suit with short sleeves. Must be my thick blood from living
here on Lake Michigan and sailing in the spring when it's 33 degrees
air AND water temps.

I'll be mobile, ready to go where it's kickin'. Looks like some real
solid NW winds around 25-30 knots for Sunday. Should be killer on the
Evo.

Anyone else around the Tampa area?

9 ft of freshies v. ehhhh....well...maybe 15 mph winds near shore. That's a no-brainer.

Bear in mind the NWS is not as good as tea leaves. And if you read the large print, it is
out to 20 NM. That's their worst/best case. It's winter here Dave. You'll be lucky if you're
not battin' at flies standing on the beach.

Better to get you kicks in the terrain park.

Two caveats.

One, I haven't looked at the weather, so I don't know if you are right
or wrong about the condiditons.

Two, I don't live there anymore.

I would go to North Beach at Ft. Desoto. I was visiting last winter
and got in a session with my old buddies there. Got a phone call this
year from a couple of friends who were standing on the beach over the
Christmas Holiday bragging about the great session they just got in at
N. Beach. Still a very popular location when the conditions are right.
And Strong NW is right for N Beach. There is always a group out at N.
Beach. If all else fails try the Northern end of the parking lot at
Pasagrille Beach. Just south of the Don Cesar by... what... 3 miles or
less?

The St. Pete sailors are generally a very friendly and accomodating
group.

Check out this link...

There are other options depending on tide up in the Clearwater area.
But I never really sailed too much with that group so I don't know if
anyone is still up there or what the season did to the breaks up in
that area.

If you go make sure you drop a trip report back in here. I love
reading about a good trip!

Have Fun
Tom
