 | found an interesting wind map here: http://www.energy.ca.gov/maps/wind_power_50m.jpg
Didn't realize that there's a really windy area along the northern Cali coast (southern Humbolt County). Too bad there's no access roads.

 | Actually you can take rt 211 past Petrolia and then Lighthouse Road to the mouth of the Mattole River. I've done the hike from there to Shelter Cove (the Lost Coast Trail) and it was quite windy (25+) at times. Surf looked vicious at the Mattole River when I was there, but might work at times. Humboldt county windsurfing seems to mostly happen at Big Lagoon.
You can get some idea of river mouth here:

 | Dang, those 360 pics are AMAZING. I've got slow dial-up and these pics came up in no time. How'd they do that?
Unlike WARDOG, my time in Humboldt was rather humble. Lived at the "Lighthouse Ranch".... a church group dedicated to "going into all the world and spreading the word", "sharing Jesus". Yep, got sent out on variuos get-rich-quick missions (schemes) for the church. Unfortunately, I got dropped off on a lonely stretch of freeway far too many times and was told "you don't have what it takes to serve God".
If only I could have that wasted time back.... if I had only known about windsurfing at that early age. If only I had taken a different road.
Dang.

 | BTW, the Lighthouse Ranch is still up for sale... just in case anyone wants to start a windsurfing colony (and has a couple million $$$$ laying around):
http://www.tablebluff.com/
It's got some incredible scenery:

Guess the previous owners couldn't make it profitable enough?

There was a crew of us that learned to windsurf at Big Lagoon back in the day...it's not the only place to windsurf...
http://surfingsports.com/images/humboldt_wind1.jpg http://surfingsports.com/images/humboldt_wind2.jpg http://surfingsports.com/images/humboldt_wind3.jpg
I have scoured just about every foot of coastline in Humboldt Country while getting an Oceanography degree there...by foot, boat, and airplane....also, did geomorphology....beach and nearshore processes... Partnered with the late Tom Pratte in the natural Resources Dept., who subsequently founded Surfrider... Anyways, my posse were all accomplished surfers, so we quickly headed to points North and South to try our new sport in the waves... Our crew were the first to sail at Pistol River...as we were already surfing the area regularly... http://surfingsports.com/images/pistol_old_school.jpg
I've surfed the Mattole Rivermouth...actually, don't think there is a rivermouth on the North Coast I haven't surfed...prolly never do it again... This zone is EXTREMELY sharky...many attacks here...
Once you get away from the rivermouths, the coast gets very rocky... lots of submerged board/fin eating rocks...steep beach entries with backwash...
Top pic is the Mattole... http://surfingsports.com/images/humboldt_lost_coast.jpg http://surfingsports.com/images/humboat.jpg

Dood, I know what you mean...man, I've gotten it bad...haven't had it in years , though...knock on wood... Prolly never gotten it as bad, as the last El Nino... The Urushiol oils float...and I surfed a spot West of here that works on macking swells...called Poison Oak Pt. Holy shmoly...all of the rain washed the oils down the creek and into the surf break...along with rattlesnakes and other varmints...
The old oatmeal bath wasn't working...good old fashioned shot of Prednisone cleared it right up...ughhhh...

 | Some of the Core Cape guys (Scott,Kenny,Victor,Brian) from around here started going down there on a more regular basis the last couple of years. I got skunked of coarse when I was there last year. But the wave at the north end looks nice, side off,and fluky as per usual. There are some photos in Windtracks Vol 14 #4 of a few guys years back. Also saw some mention in an old California Boardsailor from Casario about visiting the place with the Schaible brothers. I'm looking forward to heading down there more this year. It's about four hours from Pistol I think. Jeff

Interesting map, but according to it the bay area is the worst spot to sail in all of of california. Heck, Santa Barbara is better than any site on the coast, the Delta or even Treasure Island.
I think there may be something going on in terms of average wind vs. seasonal wind, huge storm fronts or nothing, and maybe wind that is slightly more offshore showing up on the map as more coastal. Also, there probably is an issue with wind over a large region vs. wind that is very localized.
Does anyone know how the legend translates into wind speeds?

Must be an anomaly...a glitch in their model...or maybe some geographer spilled red ink on the map...there's never any wind around here...;-)

 | Yeah, well, I've looked at the weekly graphs for Jalama every time I head to San Diego. It's always just borderline, if anything, and chances of getting skunked are high, at least if you trust iWindsurf site.
Or maybe I'm just spoiled, living 5 mn from Berkeley, 10 mn from Treasure Island, and 45 minutes from the Delta ;-)

Let me put it this way, I don't even bring gear when I go to SD. All I bring is my suit and a boogie board. However, if I was sure there was wave sailling, I would do the drive to Jalama (how long is is anyway?). But I'd have to be pretty sure that I can sail.
> Oh, and I always forget how gorgeous the drive through Pittsburg and > Antioch is on the way to the Delta...;-)
If you manage to enjoy the scenery, then you're not in as much of a hurry as I am...when it blows I'm usually just looking out for cops...

OK, but seriously, just how reliable is this. If I come to SD for a week, and can convince the wife to let me head to Jalama twice, am I gonna sail, or sit on the beach? If you make it so I can sail when we go visit the in-laws, I'll owe you big. ;-)

 | Uh, Paul, Jalama is about the mid point between Berkeley and San Diego (if you take 101). Stop onna way down, and onna way up, too. If no wind, winetasting is in order (seen Sideways yet?). Tri-tip sanwiches too.
You can overnite in Santa Barbara, stay at the original Motel 6 (not bad, about a block from the beach).

 | So what's my next best shot for a one day trip if I'm stuck in S.D.? Wardog put Jalama at 6 hours, and that's a bit much.
I looked at local SD sites, and it seems like unless you have formula gear it's not really worth the hassle of packing it.

How about Lake Hodges? It's north county inland (30-40 minutes north of downtown). It should be open this summer, the lake finally has water in it again. It's the only local consistent wind that you don't need formula gear for. Cabrillo Beach and Belmont Shores up in LA county are probably the next nearest things but not until spring/summer. J-street in San Diego Harbor is fun when winter storms roll through.
Good luck! I'm wishing I could move away from this beautiful, calm, no- wind city.
Kirk.

 | Actually Hodges is about 5 mn from where we stay, so that would be ideal, but for the past few years there has been hardly any water and no sailing. Also, as far as I can tell, you can only sail there on Saturdays? I've never seen the gate to the sailing area open, and I've never seen any sailing there.
I'd love to find out more about sailing there....it's so close, it would really be ideal.

 | If there is a classic clearing wind post-storm, try Leo Carrillo or County Line, both in Malibu, north of the town center. Each offer great sailing, with Leo a point break and County Line a jumble of pitching shorebreak at various depths. Both get huge with a swell, but Leo remains bump and jump in hard NW wind assuming there is no southern swell. County line picks up more, but closes out sooner. Big sideshore, downwind current at County Line, but nothing worse than the walk of shame if things go bad. You will find less sideshore current at Leo due to the point, but it eventually gets dicey if you break down and drift more than 1/4 mile to the south. That said, Leo Carrillo is a great place to learn how to angle down the line, while County Line is full-on nasty and pitching on a far smaller scale then Jalama. Both are a lot closer to SB, too.
Google for Leo and County line, both Wardog and I posted on these about a year ago.

 | Neither is a secret spot. Both are on PCH. Leo is easy since it's also a state park. County line is about 1.5 miles north, just after a row of condo's on the ocean side. I also meant to say that both are closer to SD (not SB as I wrote) than Jalama. Both are fun, and Leo gets good summer thermals, too. It's even further away and harder to get to now that PCH Hwy 1 is washed out in two places...gonna take a lot of work to get it back together...back roads...one way in...one way out...the J is prolly six hours from San Diego...definitely not a day trip...

 | Title of map indicates wind at 50 meters. I'm assuming this is above ground level and doesn't necessarily correlate with surface winds.

 | Hmmm. How the heck do they know what the wind is doing 150 feet up in the air?
That would explain some of the weirdness though.
