 | I am trying to extract stills from an avi file. I play the file, and try the screen capture, but it captures a black box over where the avi file was playing. This black box will display the avi if I put it over the spot where the avi file is playing. I assume that this is because the graphics card is doing some fancy stuff to play the avi file faster, which means that the os doesn't actually have the bits of the file, it only displays a special color that lets the graphics card do its magic. This being the case, how do I actually capture a still image from the avi file???
Thanks

 | You can do this in Microsoft's Windows Movie Maker. I have also used a tool called AVIedit http://www.am-soft.ru/download.html

If you mean the WIndows screen capture, it won't work becasue Video Acceleration bypasses something in Windows. If you ask what that is, someone else will have to answer :-).
Two solutions:
1. Turn off video acceleration (right click on the desktop, choose Properties, then Settings | Advanced | Troubleshoot and slide the Hardware acceleration slider to the left. Press Apply, then OK your way out.
2. There might be a snapshot button in the program (or one or more of the programs) you use to watch the video. If so, this is the esisest way to do it. You'll have to look. It usually looks like an icon of a 35mm camera.

Most editing programs will do it, but I assume you're not interested in spending much money on this. Take a look at virtualdub, an open-source, free program that, I suspect, will do what you want.
