I went out running this morning (first time YEARS) and when I stopped
to take walk breaks, I noticed the top of foot was hurting like an
MFer. Kind of at the bend where the foot meets the ankle.

Is it probably just soreness that will go away once I get used to some
daily jogging? Does anyone else have soreness in that spot?

Cancerous tumor. Don't bother seeking help, it's far too advanced.

As others have said, check your lacing. I get that now and then too,
and I don't lace the shoe on that foot as high.

I think it's a form of tendinitis.

Dropping a sledge hammer on it would probably do it.

I'll check that out, but I don't think it's a cyst, it's probably just
soreness. It just seems like an odd place to be sore.

I probably started off too fast anyway. I think I'll go back to a 30
minute walk for the rest of the week and try jogging again on Monday.
Unless it's a cancerous tumor. Then I'm not sure what I'll do next.

It is.

Suicide, immediately! It's the only way.

Bill - I had it once after tying my laces too tight. It was sore for a few
days, and
since then I'm careful with my lacing.

Leafing through rec.running, I read a message from Billmanweh@charter.net

Do you have a bump and/or a red mark on the top of the tendon (tibialis
anterior)? If so, this is most likely a ganglion cyst. I have also had this
on and off in the past. A lot of times the cyst will develope right under
the top lacing on of your shoe. This is a common problem with figure
skaters (it's also called "skater's bite"), since they do a lot of bending
of the ankle with tight fitting skates. When it gets inflamed it can become
extremely painful. Here it is described in more detail:
http://www.goldenskate.com/articles/2001/040202.shtml

Using an alternative lacing pattern will lessen the pressure directly over
the cyst and thereby relieve the pain while you're running. If the cyst is
high enough on your foot you can just not lace the top 2 or 3 eyelets, or
just leave them very loose. What I do is tie my shoe snuggly up to just
below the cyst. I then make a bow right there, and then take the long ends
of the bow and continue lacing to the top very loosely, then make another
very loose bow at the top so that there is almost zero pressure over the
cyst. So the shoe should be snug up until just below the cyst and then very
lose over the cyst and higher.

Here are some other lacing patterns you can try from the New Balance web
site: http://tinyurl.com/2wtdj. Click on where it says "Pain on the Top of
Your Feet.

Maybe you tied your shoes too tight. Rookie mistake that I still make
from time to time.

It's probably just phantom pain. Unexplainable pains throughout the
body. Lots of girls get it when they're dropping an egg.
