 | I have never flown before so I'm not up on which sites to go to to get really good deals. I'm going to NYC from Washington, DC or I could leave from Dulles or BWI as well. Is there such a thing as airfare being around the same as a bus or train trip would be or is that wishful thinking?
Where would u suggest I go to look?
Thanks.

 | I was on the flyi site this morning and they have one way fares for $129 to JFK or Newark. I have heard nothing but good things about the carrier. I haven't flown them myself, but they have a great Vegas deal that I'm seriously thinking of taking advantage of.

I think someone (was it Sam?) made a post here regarding a negative experience with Independence Air, something to do with a missed connection, IIRC. That wouldn't be an issue if you're flying out of DC where their hub is, though.

here's a copy if my Independence Air experience ------------------------------------ Indepenence Air is a joke. they are just about the most unprofessional airline i've experienced. When we were headed to Knoxville a few weeks ago there was a fog issue, and numerous flights were grounded/delayed/cancelled. When flights were cancelled, NOBODY announced it! If you had a question you would get a different answer from every person you asked. Our flight was 8:25am we left at 3:30pm at 1:45pm they announced the "on time" departure of the 2pm flight to...KNOXVILLE! as we sat there waiting for our flight. Right after they announced the 2pm flight, they announced that in 15 mins they would page the back up crew for the 8:25am flight....HUH? One supervisor told me that the crew was diverted a 2nd time, another said we had no crew and the back ups were being paged in 15 mins. another said they might have seats on the 2pm flight for us.
at 2pm the the 2pm flight didn't board and it was announced that it was delayed for maintenance reasons, then immediately they announce the boarding of our flight (which they hadn't even paged the back up crew for yet...) We were all on the flight and 45 mins later, after fueling (which was ten mins after we had all been seated) we pushed back. we had no ice, and they said it would be another hour till the ice came, and she asked if we minded flying w/o ice (remember we're now well over 6hrs late)
Before we landed in Knoxville the flight attendant took the leftover coffee and walked it back and dumped it in the toilet in the back of the plane!
Our return flight was uneventful except for the fact that it was scheduled to arrive at 10:05pm and we arrived at 9:20pm which leads me to ask, HOW does a flight schedule call for a 1hr and 40min flight on a leg that takes a maximum of 60mins to complete?
Southwest knows how to fly! the only gripe i've ever had was a safety conscious captain that kept the fasten seat belt light on when it wasn't needed. (I didn't have to go, but the people around me were squirming)

It's an ActiveX add-in to the browser that lets you simultaneously search hundreds of sites, including all the airlines, consolidators, Expedia, Travelocity, etc., and it then ranks the flights based on price or time or whatever you want.
BTW, it's free.

Be aware; some regard it as Spyware. Spybot will take note of it, but doesn't automatically check it as "you should remove this". I'm still not sure about Sidestep, myself. (There's no such thing as "free" software. There's a cost somewhere.)
Not saying you should avoid it. But just be aware that it has some mysterious tendencies. If you view Gmail as highly invasive, you probably won't want Sidestep on your PC.

I have tried getting decent fares on airlines through all these bargain travel sites...with no luck. I travel from orange County (CA) to Seattle twice a year, and have always gotten the best price right on the website of Alaska Airlines.
Perhaps others have done better elsewhere...but I like to know exactly when I am going to fly...not just the day, but the hour too. Get on those bargain sites and you sometimes never know what time of day they will give you.
A buddy of mine recently got what he thought was a bargain fare from LA to Orlando -- he didn't realize they put him on NW and he had a three hour stopover in freezing Minnie-Apple-Ass. He said even inside the terminal it was cold...I think he said he got a $99.00 fare, but then when he got home checked direct flights on other airlines at only $10-20.00 more!!!

I'd say look to Acela, since it's faster than flying.

Have you looked at an Acela timetable lately? Even accounting for lead times for security checks at the airport, I'd say air still beats rail. At worst, it's just about dead even. And Acela's fares are no bargain, either, unless you like taking a train at 2am or thereabouts.
Acela was a step in the right direction, but Amtrak still rots.

Plus, Delta and USAirways have their own shuttles that run between Boston, NY, and DC, and each have their own devoted security line which means you don't even have to account for security lead time because there's rarely a line.
Sorry Iain, just because it's a fast train does not mean it's faster or cheaper than flying :)

Because it's government-owned and not required to make a profit?

Fair enough. Fast trains are pretty, and they came from Canada, which is nice. :)

4.5 hours using vamoosebus.com
and it's $35 round trip
BWI is 1 hour from DC Dulles is 45 mins
They ask that you arrive 1.5 to 2 hrs early
parking is $9 at BWI and $10 at Dulles (I believe)
I'd take the bus, and buy a DVD player... with the money I saved. (I actually did that)
SAM
PS, you can get the NY Hilton on priceline for about $100 a nite. see biddingfortravel.com for details and etc on how to use priceline to your greatest advantage.

In addition to Moosh's excellent suggestions, Independence Air (www.flyi.com) might be worth looking into. They're one of the small discount carriers that you won't find on Orbitz and the like. Dulles is their hub, and they fly direct from there to either JFK or Newark.
