 | I haven't bought a knife in a long time. I'm looking for any recommendations on a carry knife, for 'emergency' (protection) use. Here's what I'm looking for (in no particular order.)
1. Less than $100 US. 2. Light weight. 3. Would like a 4" blade. 4. Folder, with a pocket clip. 5. EASY one-handed operation. 6. Readily available.
I am aware that everybody will have their own opinion, that's great. I am NOT trying to start an argument. If you'd prefer, send private email to geotek(at)gmail.com

I'm sort of on a fixed income so treats are not frequent, but last year = I bought myself a Kershaw Leek w/serrated edge. with practice it can be = opened well with either hand. It fits your criteria except 3. My other = treat is a SOG Flash II, also serrated edge. This is very easy to open = either hand, and the belt clip is not in the way as in the Leek. Again, = doesn't meet number 3. But this is by far my favorite folding, easy to = open, one handed opening knife. Since I use a cane for walking = assistance, the easy open is much more important than your other = criteria in my case.
Both also have a lock to prevent unwanted openings. The SOG is more = positive than the Leek but both do work.

 | your best bet is to go to a store and pick out what YOU like.
but, if you can't do that. i'll throw in the kershaw vapor or vapor II. you can check them out at kershawknives.com. you can buy them at walmart for under $25.

The Delica has more of an aggressive shape and would work well for 'emergency protection', I guess. The M21-12 has more of a round-bellied shaped blade than the M16s, which makes it very nice utility knive (that's why it is my EDC). The 'Carson-flipper' makes one handed operation very very easy (comparable to an automatic). It sounds like the Al Mar Falcon Ultralight would also fit your criteria, but I don't have one and would be interested in the opinions of others on this one (especially regarding its sturdiness).

 | The big Benchmade Griptillian is a fave, but the blade is only like 3.5" long, sturdy, reliable, easy to operate even with gloves on, relatively light at 3.25 oz., and can be had for ~$60-$65.

Better carrying 2 pool balls in a football sock. And wearing a pair of steel toecap boots. Edged weapons are far too easy to accidentally kill someone with. Who are you expecting to be attacked by anyway?

As I mentioned already, I am NOT trying to start an argument. I'd like to buy a new knife. I don't need 2 balls. geotek

 | I'm not sure there are many (any?) 4" blades that are light weight -- by which I assume you mean 2-3oz. Any that are, are not likely to be under $100.
General rule of thumb: as weight goes down, price goes up.

 | Not sure how well it meets #2 (fine for me) but you can find a Benchmade 710 online for <$100 all over the place. It's not assisted opening but it is so silky smooth that it can be easily opened with a flick of the wrist.
I'll be picking up the 710HS is about a month.
