I made a juggling video yesterday, just to try out how it would work out
using a single camera in various angles and to see if my new digital
camera is any good at shooting video.

This should really be done with a juggling routine that you have fairly
solid, just film the whole routine from a couple of angles and then cut
and paste it together. I don't have a routine so I just did four club
singles, which I have been playing around with a bit recently.

Technical stuff:

Shot with a Canon Ixus 40 (PowerShot SD300 for our American friends) at
30 fps 640x480. Edited with VirtualDub (FREE!) and compressed from AVI
to MPEG1 with TMPGEnc (ALSO FREE!). The video was shot under fluorescent
lights, which of course is crap, but I think it turned out surprisingly
well (for a camera that's about the size of a pack of cigarettes).

Oh, I filmed and edited the whole thing in half an hour - isn't
technology amazing?

See what you think.

Nice. The different angles flowed pretty seamlessly, and the quality
was pretty good, particularly for a digital camera. Personally I would
have gone for a smaller resolution at a higher quality compression to
keep the file the same size, since the picture quality was noticeably
lower on the close-up of your face.
Oh, and yes, your 4 club singles was very nice too

Agreed, I think you could get a better quality to compression ratio for
that amount of colour and objects in the background and that amount of
motion with either a bit rate around 700 or 800 Kbps at 320x240
resolution or with a higher bit rate at the same resolution. I would try
perhaps 1500 Kbps at 640x480 if you wanted to keep this resolution. If
you have a simpler background that doesn't change, such as an all black
or white backgound, you could probably lower the bitrate considerably
with the same quality.

TMPGEnc and VirtualDub are great programs, aren't they! I use them a
lot. I wrote a tutorial on MPEG compression with TMPGEnc for internet
video use on the diabolo.ca forum here:

The other thing to think about is that if you are going to use a low bit
rate that causes blocks to appear in the image, you may want to try
selecting the option "Soften block noise" under "Quantize matrix" in the
settings panel.

Looking forward to seeing juggling videos from you in the future.

Cheers,
Sean

Fantastic. Thank you.

I'll try out fiddling with the settings and making some test versions
after I read your article.

same to me!!
I'm working with TMPGEnc for some years, but never changed the settings
Tanks a lot, Gerd
