 | I have a Marlin .22 that will not fire. It seems to be a cheap spring since I can fire it when I take it apart and pull the firing pin.
Is this worth a trip to a gunsmith or time to chunk it? I need a .22 for pest control.

Call a couple gunsmiths in your area and ask them what it would cost to replace the spring. I can't imagine that it would be more than the cost of a new gun. If the rest of the gun is decent, I'd say, repair it! -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com

 | If you can replace the spring yourself, check out http://www.e-gunparts.com to order the part online. They have schematics for many guns including the Marlin 99 http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp?chrMasterModel=082Zz99C that make selecting the right part easy. I haven't dealt with them, but the prices seem OK. Many of the springs listed for this gun cost only a couple dollars each.

 | I tried to download a schematic and I really could not read the vital parts - too blurry.
When it is removed from the stock, I can move the trigger mechanism to cock it. Other wise it won't. I don't know if anything is missing. I just thought a gunsmith would look at it for 2 seconds and be able to see what I can't. But at best, this is a jamomatic when working properly.

So is something binding in the stock and not really a spring problem? Sounds like it. You also mentioned it was jamming when it was somewhat working too. Could be bad metal to wood fit somewhere that has gotten worse as the wood got older.
Just guessing not being able to look at it.

If you cannot fix it yourself you might make out better trading it, of course to someone that you inform of the problem. The local repair shop around here is pretty expensive. As an inexpensive replacement I would recommend the NEF Sportster if you don't mind a singleshot.
Try to fix it yourself,
John
