 | IRISH GOVERNMENT PRESS RELEASE 20/01/2005
Irish Minister for Arts, Sport & Tourism, Mr. John O'Donoghue welcomes Appointment of Director of the National Library of Ireland.
John O'Donoghue T.D., Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, today (Thursday, 20 January, 2005) welcomed the announcement by the Council of Trustees of the National Library of Ireland of the appointment of Mr Aongus O'hAonghusa as Director.
Minister O'Donoghue said "I wish Mr O'hAonghusa, who has been Acting Director of the National Library since September 2003, every success in his new appointment. I am confident that Mr. O'hAonghusa's appointment will ensure the efficient and effective transition of the National Library to autonomous status under the National Cultural Institutions Act 1997 and that, under his stewardship, the Library will continue to grow in international stature."

Hmmm . . . I thought that the National Cultural Institutions Act 1997 was to be implemented this month, that it would facilitate the appointment of a new autonomous Board for the National Library, and that it would be left to this Board to confirm the appointment of a permanent Director. Or is the act being put into implementation at this very moment? There is still no Chief Herald, and it remains to be seen if the Library Director will again be called upon to take on this additional job, or whether it will remain vacant or fall into abeyance. Clients who have been waiting for signatures for their patents since September 2003 must be increasingly concerned, and again it should be pointed out that a specific statute is required if Irish armorial grants are to be safely resumed, as Section 13 of the 1997 act is inadequate as it stands. Strange to think that these problems would probably have remained unnoticed had not one Terence MacCarthy somehow persuaded the then Chief Herald and his Deputy to oblige him with a certificate of Gaelic chiefship in 1992.
