British Royal Mint 2005 Gold Bullion Sovereign - A new design of St. George
and the Dragon by Timothy Noad, Herald Painter, Her Majesty's College of
Arms in London, appears on the reverse of the 2005 gold sovereign. This is
only the third time that the classic depiction of St. George by Benedetto
Pistrucci has been replaced.

I think this is a wonderful version - the design really has energy and
motion.

From his website.."Timothy Noad, MA, HSDAD, FSSI, FCLAS, has been working at
the College of Arms since 1986 and has undertaken many important heralidic
commissions including painting the ceiling panels for the Tudor ceiling of
the Chapel Royal at St. James's Palace." http://www.timothynoad.co.uk/

The artist also appears to have used interesting artistic license: the
dexter arm wields the sword and also bears the shield.

hmm....do you think it's not possible that he's holding the shield forward
with the sinister arm? I also wondered about the perspective of the sword
being held behind his head.

...still, just thinking that everything in the design encircles the cross on
the shield making it the center and focal point (I like that..)..and if the
dexter arm raised the sword back like in the configuration of many
equestrian seals, I'm not sure he could get the same close-up view which
clearly shows St.George's expression through the raised visor (I rather like
that too..)
