 | I was just going through some stuff and came across the polarizing filter for my reflex II sight. This little thing is just amazing. If you haven't seen one, its a little glass (plastic?) lensed and aluminum screw on adapter that screws to the front of the sight. When you spin the outer ring on the filter the glass seems to change how much light goes through, from almost totally clear to almost totally opaque. Does anybody know the basics of how it works?
I understand that Trijicon recommends them if you use a flashlight on your weapon, which I do not.
Thanks, --Dan

 | There are two polaroid lenses, one of which rotates. Both lenses have tiny lines photo etched into the glass. When the lines in both lenses are parallel, little light is blocked. When the lines are perpendicular, almost all light is blocked. Interesting Quantum physics experiment is to introduce a third lense between the two lenses when they are at 90 degree orientation. If the third (middle) lense is at 45 degree orientation to the other lenses, light can again pass through.

I think this page describes the weapon you are thinking of:

A Walther P5C.

 | Check this out:
http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/polarization/polarizationI.html It's a pretty good explanation of how they work.

Two polarizing filters rotated 90-degrees from each other are essentially opaque. A 0 and 180-degrees, they are transmissive. Obviously your sight filter is actually 2 filters, one of which you rotate to control transmissivity.
There are plenty of sites on the web that talk about the fundamental operation of a polarizing filter. It is pretty basic technology, give Google a try and you should come up w/ more than enough information.
