 | I finally got a chance to shoot my new Springfield 1911 yesterday, put 100
rounds of WWB through it with no misfeeds. The only thing that concerns me
is that twice, the gun went into battery when I inserted a fully loaded
magazine. I was holding the mag release button down when inserting a
magazine. Could this have anything to do with it?

I don't think so, but why are you holding down the mag release?
Sounds like a problem with your slide lock. Sometimes they slip when
jarrd around. I put a detent in mine so that it holds in place.

No. The mag release button is not the culprit.
When the slide strips the last round out of a magazine and chambers it, the mag
follower begins pressing up on the slide stop lever. When the last round is
fired, the slide goes back and the lever is pushed up to engage the notch to
hold it open. One cause of your problem could be a bent mag follower - doesn't
push far enough up. That is easy to fix.
If that is not the cause, you should take it to a gunsmith. The slide stop
lever or the notch in the slide may need some adjustment. Put down that
hacksaw and don't try to do it yourself.

If the mag follower was bent, and wasnt pushing the slide stop up far
enough, then the slide would just close after the last shot.

| According to my 45 repair manual, the magazine is the culprit. As I
have said many times, the magazines have to be fitted to the individual
gun. My Kuhnhausen shop manual goes into it in detail on how to do it
and why.
What may work fine in mine may not work as well in yours. Many out of
spec magazines won't work in anyones! The cheap ones get malformed
easily with use or poor handling. even the good quality ones may start
to malfunction over a period of time.

| Ive noticed this happens to a number of Semi-auto pistols, not just your
1911. It happens on my Sig. It happens on my friends HK, though you REALLY
have to smack it home. It happens to my other friends AMT every time you
insert a mag with any decent force. We *think* it happens because the force
of the mag inserting causes inertial movement of the slide release, or maybe
even the slide, but this is just a quick theory. Holding down the mag
release may make the problem worse, but I am unsure. I am looking to
purchace a Springfield 1911 next paycheck. How do you (or anyone else) like
it overall?

Thanks for the help, as always everyone. I'll keep you updated.
I absolutely love this gun so far-the way it fits my hand, the accuracy,
the weight. I think it was the perfect 1911 for my first one, inexpensive
enough that I don't mind using it as a guinea pig. The only downside so far
is that the Springfield mags (100% steel) that the gun came with are crap,
totally out of spec. My gunsmith couldn't believe it. I'm using Wilson
Combat mags now, and I sent the Springfield mags back to them.
It's too early to really tell, but hopefully I finally have a gun I can
trust. The others haven't worked out that way.
