Asha Goldberg

1942 - 2004

Asha Goldberg, an enthusiastic folk dancer, both taught folk dancing and ran
the music at Ashkenaz for many years. He was legendary for his spirit,
kindness, encouragement, and amazing photographic dance memory. He danced
with joy and brought much joy into the lives of others.

Besides teaching folk dance at Ashkenaz, Asha taught dance classes at
Berkeley Hillel, UCSF, Albany YMCA, gave numerous workshops, and taught at
the Arcata Dance Festival. Asha was involved with the annual San Francisco
Balkan Kolo Festival and was the head of it for many years. He was a
faithful supporter and participant in the Seattle Folk Dance Festival and
Northwest Folklife as well.

Asha was also a folk dance performer. He founded, directed and choreographed
for an Israeli performing group called Shoshanim. He performed too for many
years as part of an international folk dance duo called "Asha & Louise"
which performed all over the Bay Area for festivals and private events.

Asha deeply loved folk dancing and his beautiful spirit will long live on in
the memory of numerous dance communities.

There are two occasions planned to celebrate the life of our beloved Asha
Goldberg with a brief memorial, followed by remembrances, and music for folk
dancing (and in Seattle, contra dancing as well). Please bring your memories
of Asha to share, plus food or a beverage for a potluck. Please share this
information with anyone who may be interested.
