There is still room at the Scandinavian Ski-Dance Weekend January 28-30 in
Vermont.

The flier is below.

In addition to the people listed in the flier, Olav Sem will be there. Olav is
a master dancer and singer from Heddal, Telemark. He will probably help teach
the singing class Saturday and Sunday morning.

Space is starting to fill up. I don't think there is enough room for more
people stay two-per-room. But there is space for people to stay four-per-room.
Or you can stay at a local motel, hotel or B&B. (I'm attaching the list of
local places.)

Ninth Annual Scandinavian
SKI AND DANCE WEEKEND

January 28 - 30, 2005

At the Hulbert Outdoor Center, Fairlee, Vermont

Cross-country and downhill skiing nearby.

Friday and Saturday night Scandinavian dance parties with musicians

BÅRD-VEGARD BJØRHUSDAL
SARAH GRANSKOU
LORETTA KELLEY
BRUCE SAGAN
TOBY WEINBERG

The dance parties will emphasize Norwegian and Swedish traditional dance
(bygdedans), with a lot of Telespringar, but there will likely also be waltz,
reinlender, pols, hambo, and other dances. Singles, couples, and families are
welcome.

Saturday and Sunday mornings, Bård-Vegard Bjørhusdal will give group fiddle
lessons.

David Golber and Arna Desser will teach beginning Telespringar and Telegangar,
with Toby Weinberg playing. Sarah Granskou will teach traditional Norwegian
singing.

The Place: Fairlee is in the Connecticut River valley in central Vermont.
Hulbert is a camp-like setting. We dance in the same convenient and homey
building where we eat. Cross-country skiing out the door (depending on the
weather), and more cross-country and downhill areas nearby.

Lodgings: Accommodations at Hulbert are in warm, modern cabins, each with three
or four bedrooms and two full baths. All bedclothes are included. Each
bedroom contains four beds. Two of them roll on the floor and can be pushed
together; the other two are at upper-berth level and are hinged to the wall.
(Upper bunks have simpler mattresses, but are still OK for adults.) The cabins
are a short walk from the building where we eat and dance.

Skiing: Cross-country skiing out the door (no trail fees) is possible at
Hulbert, depending on the weather, and while Hulbert has no skis for rent, the
Lake Morey Inn, three miles down the road, usually does. Chris Levey and
Barbara DeFelice have prepared a guide describing a range of skiing
opportunities nearby, and also where to go for window-shopping and croissants
if you don't ski. This information will be posted at Hulbert, but will also be
available in advance (along with snow conditions) at the website:
http://engineering.dartmouth.edu/~cgl/skidance/
If you have other questions about local skiing, feel free to contact Chris and
Barbara at 802-785-4121 or c.levey@dartmouth.edu. (Thanks, Chris and Barbara!)

Trail fees and lift tickets are not included.

Getting there: Hulbert is only six miles from Interstate 91. The recommended
airport is Manchester, NH. Hartford, CT or Albany, NY may be convenient, if
someone will meet you there. You can get to White River Junction, VT, 30 miles
from Hulbert, by bus or train. I will try to arrange ride sharing.

Meals: The full price includes six meals, Friday night dinner to Sunday lunch,
plus late-night snacks on Friday and Saturday. Food is served cafeteria style,
with no choices. (A vegetarian alternative will be available, but we need a
count. See the registration slip. If you have special dietary needs, contact
Hulbert directly at 802/333-3405.) Saturday night dinner will be salmon. It
is OK to bring alcoholic beverages.

Friday night dinner will be soup, salad and sandwich makings, and will be left
out until late. For those who want to ski all day, materials for a bag lunch
will be set out both Saturday and Sunday morning. (We'll want a count the
night before.)

Other: You can stay four-to-a-room or two-to-a-room. We have all six cabins at
Hulbert. But it's still not a lot of rooms, so we will still need a good
number of people to stay four-to-a-room.

If you want to stay elsewhere, I can send you a list of motels in the area. I
will also try to maintain a list to help you find other people to share with.
One nearby place is the Lake Morey Inn about three miles away at the other end
of the lake. Their rate will be $104 plus tax, per room per night (no meals).
This is a special weekend for them, and they cannot give us a lower rate. They
expect to sell out, so if you want to stay there, call early. Their number is
800/423-1211.

Prices: There is no separate charge for the teaching; I am assuming that if you
come for the teaching you will come to one or both parties.

Contact me if you have infants or children under 12.

Registration: If you are staying at Hulbert, or eating a meal there, you must
register in advance, since we have to sort out rooms, and Hulbert needs a count
to buy food. It helps me a lot if you register in advance, even if you are
coming only for the parties and teaching. Deadline is January 15.

When your check is deposited, you know your registration has been accepted.
You will get a letter with details in mid-January.

Motels, Hotels, B&Bs, etc.

Caution: This list is a mess. I just stick stuff into it at random, and don't
check and update old stuff.
So when you call, you may find that the place is closed, or that the rate I
mention is incorrect.

Motels near Hulbert:

Most of these I have not contacted myself. If you call them and get some info
I should add to this list, please send me that info.

Three miles from Hulbert, at the other end of the lake, is the Lake Morey Inn.
800/423-1211. Very nice place.

In Fairlee:

The Silver Maple motel 802/333-4326
The Fairlee Motel 802/333-9192 There's also the Farilee drive-in movie theater
behind the motel, but it's closed in January.)

Last I was in Fairlee, I went by, and stopped in at "Titus Takes Tourists"
802/333-4257. Right in the middle of Fairlee, so you're all of 4 miles or so
from Hulbert.
It's a house, run by a nice old lady, who rents rooms. Some with bath, some
with half-bath, some with shared bath.
Some one bed, some two. "Simmons Beds" she says (I didn't try the beds.)
Very reasonable rates. Very homey.

In Bradford:(6 miles north)

The Bradford motel 802/222-4467

Fairlee does not have a Chamber of Commerce (too small).
Hanover probably does.

Here is Chris Levey's list and comments (thanks, Chris):

Here are some more places of lodging.
Hanover/Norwich inns are expensive; probably Lyme and Dowds too.
THere are lots of others in WRJ and Lebanon, but that's a bit far.
There's also stone house B&B in Thetford, but I think they are
no longer taking guests. Distances are rough estimates.
