 | One of my daughter's friends came over with his dad yesterday to look at horses for sale. I quickly assessed the situation and advised them to spend that money on lessons instead, not necessarily with me, just in general. They seemed agreeable. They then wanted to stick around and visit, and the dad was full of stories. His family had horses when he was a kid and ran cattle. He told me that not many people realize this but horses need to eat meat. Otherwise they don't have any protein in their diets. He said his family rountinely would feed their horses dead rabbits and squirrels so they would have a higher protein content in their diet. And people who don't know that have horses who don't have enough protein in their diets.
Now, he was very serious. And even somewhat concerned that I did not know this very important aspect of horse husbandry. My question for you all: I didn't get the feeling these were old rotten squirrels and rabbits - so if a horse eats fresh meat, do you suppose he'd colic? I can't imagine it.

 | My TB mare had a passion for chili dogs. I found out when I wasn't paying enough attention and she snatched it right out of my hand and gobbled it up. I never got close enough with pizza because it was like holding a bucket of sweet grain up to her face, apparently.

Maybe it's because I talk to a lot of different people? And I don't usually post about the boring stuff.... At any rate, my idiot magnet status must be hereditary since this guy is my daughter's friend's father. But yeah, a study would be cool.

Viejo ate a Hot Pocket once, the turkey and cheese kind. Grain on the outside in the crust, at least...

Imagine how long they would live if I fed them dead squirrels and rabbits......

Small amounts of fresh meat shouldn't hurt a horse any (it won't help him, either). -- John Hasler Boarding, Lessons, Training john@dhh.gt.org Hay, Jumps, Cavallox Dancing Horse Hill Elmwood, WI USA

I'm sorry to keep pointing it out, but you are a magnet for idiots. I don't think this is due to any personal fault on your part. Maybe it has something to do with pheromones. It might make an interesting scientific study if I could figure out how to design an experiment.
BTW, my old quarter horse ate dog food with apparent relish, but dog food has quite a high grain content.

 | There are stories of horses eating meat, but I haven't witnessed myself. Of course this guy is full of it, horses get plenty of protien from forage.
