I am looking to purchase a used saddle and was wondering if you folks
had any recommendations? I'm an ebay junkie, so I will of course be
checking that out. But are there any good dedicated trade and sale
sites you recommend?

Muchas gracias!

You might take a glance at these:

duettsaddles.com

Word on the street is that they work well for wide bodies. They're
not very expensive, but they don't appear (from you tell from a
website) to be too crummy.

Buy your saddle from a saddle fitter that you can trust.

You can ruin so much by using the wrong saddle; and right now your horse
is still changing shape, so any saddle you buy might be outgrown in a
few months, and will be outgrown next year.

Buying used is a risk, even if you have a clue; when you're not used to
fitting saddles and all the things that can be wrong with them, I
wouldn't trust a saddle bought over the net.

When going to shops etc, it's useful to take a template.

You can get flexi-rulers that will shape to your horse's back - take the
profile over the withers, behind the withers and at the back of the
saddle minimum, transfer to stout paper, and it'll give you at least an
idea in the shop what you are looking for.

If the horse had not yet reached its maturity the saddle you buy now
may not be the saddle you will be riding in three years. Keep
"resale" in mind as you shop.

Sadly, used saddle shopping in East TN is not fun, as pickin's are
slim. You might ask Carla if anybody in the Hunt has something that
you could buy, or maybe even lease for a couple of years. Then, when
the horse is mature and you have a better idea of your equitation
goals you could look for something more permanant.

I got mine from the local tack shop.... they let me take it home and
ride in it making sure it fit both the horse and me.

If I were you I wouldn't not buy a saddle on ebay. Your 1/2 draft has
too wide a back for most saddles..... better to buy one you can try on him.

Sheesh I talk good.

I would *not* buy a saddle on ebay I meant to type.

Ooh! Great idea! Thanks a bunch! Liz also said I could borrow saddles
from house mountain's stash until I make a decision, so I have plenty
of time to shop.

Bill,

Is the Carla you often write about the one who has something to do with
dinosaurs?

Yup - that's the one. She is also my partner in Goneaway Tours.

Cool, thanks. It's nice to put a face with someone you all are talking
about.

I dunno. She is an Master with the TN Valley Hunt and does their
website and news letter. I'm not sure what other activities she
engages in. And I'm too much the gentleman to ask! :-)

I ask because I think I've met her at parties in Tryon. There's a Carla who is
good friends with Sami Bolton, a friend of mine. Sami's friend Carla lives near
Marysville I think.... maybe not though. She's somewhere in the Knoxville area
and she hunts.
