Ike passed his vetting with flying colors, so he'll be mine as of
tomorrow after the contract is signed. I'm very much looking forward to
a nice hack tomorrow if the weather permits. You can see him here

He lost his wolf teeth and last two caps...I wonder what the tooth
fairy will bring him tonight?

No kidding! If I fall off in the field I'll be looking for a big ol'
rock or hill! LOL

You've probably ridden with him if you went on the last TVH hunt, by
the way. I can't remember who was on him...I think his name was Gary?
He would have been with Liz Green (that's who is selling him to me).
I'll meet you at the next hunt, hopefully!

>I gather this is the 3 year old?

He is indeed! Younger than I would have gone for if I wasn't going to
be keeping him with my old trainer, that's for sure!

>What is his breed?

Ike is a TB/Belgian. I was looking for a cross so I wouldn't feel so
guilty about my fat behind! ;0)

>he is sorrel with white socks

Yup. He's quite red, but the color where he's shaved looks a lot like
honey. His mane and tail are flax. His blaze gives him a permanent
quizzical look.

>How come he is shaved naked?

He's been foxhunting almost exclusively (no jumping or running as he's
only three, just long long rides) and I've heard it helps cool them off
more quickly. But my trainer added she just liked the undercoat color
so much she couldn't resist.

>How big is he?

He's between 16.2 and 16.3, though still growing. They are guessing
he'll top out around 17.2 or so. He's a big boy!

>What kind of riding will you be doing?

I'll be hacking and fox hunting (again, in the back!) with him for at
least another year since it's not a good idea to push a baby any more
than that. Just basically lots of long walks. In the meantime I'll be
taking dressage lessons on the school horses to try to get my seat
back. Eventually I'd love to get back into jumping, but that's a long
way off judging from the shape I'm in.

>How long have you ridden?

I rode from the age of 6 until I was in my 20s, but all that went
bye-bye for about 12 years due to "life" getting in the way and then
later family illnesses. Now that things are resolved in that department
I'm getting back into what I loved more than anything else!

>What part of the country are you in?

I live in the thriving metropolis and cultural mecca of the south that
is known as Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I mean, where else can you eat
pancakes, get an airbrushed tee shirt and a tattoo all before noon?

Thanks for the interest, and I don't mind questions at all! I'm proud
of my new buddy!

Is he actually 3 now, or was that a few weeks ago?

( Makes a difference whether he should be out "hunting" at all. If he's a
babe of 2002, he's a bit young. If he's the 2001 version, that's better.)

Good gawd he's huge! How tall are you? He looks great. I am so torn
with my search - there is a half draft that I want but he's so far from
me (255 miles - I guess that's not THAT bad) and he's only 4 (well,
coming-5, I guess). I wanted an older guy! But I've been looking at
older guys all week and so far I've not been impressed with their
manners or training - they are just old but trained no better than my
own 5 year old mare. So, who knows, I should probably go check him
out. He's done mostly trail and some baby dressage stuff. He's also
done some cattle working, separating cows and calves, and nothing seems
to bother him. I'd put him with my trainer if I got him, due to his
age. sigh. I dunno. I just want them all. But he's chestnut with a
blaze also, just like your guy. Anyway, good luck, have fun.

Cindi,

Go for your half draft. They are usually amenable and wanting to please.

I like CB crosses for that reason. I have 4 rising 5 yo here atm. He is
just a super boy.

Enough brain to learn and want to please but not enough for independant
thought.

A delight to own, a pleasure to ride and a nice boy in the stable.

No - he is not for sale.

I bought him at sale for 600uk last August and have been offered 4500ukp for
him but he is staying with me.

And I want to buy his sister - gotta sell the paint first though.

He is a big boy for sure. We haven't taken a stick to him, but we guess
16.3. Liz guesses he could top out 17 or 17.2. I'm 5'6"! He has a good
sense of where people are, though, despite his size. That includes
kids.

If he's 3+ (going to be 4 in 2005), then he's not going to grow another
3-4 inches. If he's only 2+ (going to be 3 sometime in the upcoming
months of 2005), then he will still grow some, but I still wouldn't
expect to get 3 or 4 more inches, perhaps 1 or 2.

Venus sticked out at 16.3 last weekend. She will be 3 in 4 more months
(May 2005). Her Percheron dam is 18.2, her Arabian sire was just under
16, and by her birth height she should end up 17 to 17.2

Thanks Dana! I am on cloud ten. I skipped nine and went for the gusto!
It's hard not to fall for a horse that little kids run up to and hug on
his chest. Not to mention that he cantered right up to me and stuck his
nose in the halter when I went out into the field to catch him today on
only our third meeting. I literally called him, his head shot up and
here he came running.

And it was nice to hear the vet saying quietly to himself "Nice
horse...nice legs...beautiful movement...."

He was absolutely spectacular in the round pen. The vet did a quick
Join Up to mainly just watch his movement and he is just lovely and
with a beautiful proud head carriage. He's so funny... he appears so
dramatic and spectacular, but then he looks at you head on with that
big old blaze and is just as cute as a bug. How he pulls off both looks
I'll never know.

The vet said I had a great critter and I could look forward to years of
enjoyment. Yay, me! Tomorrow we get shoes (just on the front). Good
lord he's got feet the size of a salad plate! LOL

>He lost his wolf teeth and last two caps..

By "the last two caps" are you referring to the last of the baby
incisors? Generally horses lose the first 2 (center pair) when they
are 2 1/2, the next 2 when they are 3 1/2 and the remaining 2 (outside
ends) when they are 4 1/2. So he'd be 4, coming 5 (and thus a foal of
2000), if he's lost all of his baby incisors.

He's handsome -- nice horse. Congratulations. He looks a little like
my Wilbur. They have similar faces and markings. Wilbur changes color
dramatically too when clipped tho he's a bit more orange than Ike's honey.

Go nice and slow with him -- he's still a baby.

You should double-check with the vet. If he has had his last caps fall
out, he's older than 3 (which would be a good thing, IMHO). The vet's
records should indicate what teeth are baby teeth and what teeth are
adult teeth.

I'm taking driving lessons myself, and might do that one day. It looks
like a lot of fun. The vet said he would be suitable if I wanted to do
pretty much anything (with exception of endurance racing of course).
But he said competitive trail, hunting, dressage, jumping, etc would be
great choices.

Hi Claire,
Wow! I think he looks pretty nice. I haven't followed your story
really, but I gather this is the 3 year old? What is his breed? I
gather he is sorrel with white socks or is he a paint? How come he is
shaved naked? How big is he? What kind of riding will you be
