Ok I am riding again after a couple of years without much. First day yesterday
and I am feeling some tendon soreness in the legs. I have the middle age
problem of the brain telling the body to assume perfect equitation position and
the body trying to do it. I don't know how to ride without my heels all the way
down.... The little bit of muscle soreness I'm not worried about I expected
more actually.

So.... do I give the soreness a rest? Continue gently? Not worry about it? I
don't want to end up tearing something and being laid up. I'm just walking/
gentle trotting/ lateral work etc for an hour or so.

Thor is being such a lovely ride I just want to ride him all day LOL.

Where is the soreness? Why do you think it's tendon? If it is
tendon, ice is your friend. :)

Personally, I'd give it enough time off so microtrauma and
inflammation can settle down. Then resume. But just like bringing
back a horse from time off, I'd go more slowly.

Ride for 1/2-hour rather than for an hour. Take frequent breaks where
you take your feet out of the stirrups and stretch your toes toward
the ground. Bring your leg forward and back from the hip. Bend your
torso. Bend your neck. Don't put yourself in a position that you
hold for the full time you are on the horse. Let yourself out of your
"frame" for stretching breaks."

The worst things for muscles are lack of use, and over-use. Use them
a bit more wisely. :) Has Thor been in work? How 'bout spending some
of that saddle time just taking him for a hack and letting your legs
dangle? Do exercises in the saddle - airplanes, toe touches,
around-the-world. Just entertain yourself while improving flexibility
and balance. Meanwhile, gradually increase the "real" work for both
of you.

I think it's tendon because it's the same as the feeling I had when the DR said
tendonitus in the arms. It's the long outside part of the ankle to calf and the
back of the same.

I will use the ice and take more breaks and stretch. Thor hasn't been in work
either and is terribly out of shape. I was very excited yesterday though as he
was moving straight and seeking the bit all the way down. I gave him about 8-10
minutes of lunging at the trot after the walking warmup (I walked and made the
circle about 40' in diameter).
I am a weather wuss so will have a few days off as the weather gets "cold"
again on and off.
