Hello all. Anybody know what the drive is like from Salt Lake City to
Cortez, CO? My cousin was killed in Iraq, and my parents will be
flying in for his funeral. They said it's shorter to drive from Salt
Lake to Cortez than it is to drive from Denver to Cortez, but my mom is
concerned about mountains... Anybody know which route is less twisty
and steep?

This was the son of my aunt who owns all the OBHorses, the first person
to put me on a horse when I was just a tyke... Damn war.

thanks,
cindi

That would very much depend on from where you were starting.

If you're in Salt Lake then it's shorter from Salt lake. If you're in Denver
then it's a whole hell of a lot shorter from Denver.

Cortez is a place most people never want to get to especially since you have
to really want to get there to do so. After you've been there once, you'll
see why. But those that do want to get there generally approach from the
south.

Neither. Both suck.

Cindi,

I read that you're going to fly into Cortez from Denver.
Okay, if that suits you. But you're in California, right?

Personally I would fly into Albuquerque and drive from
there; that is an easy drive. Or if you cannot get a
direct flight to Albuquerque from your local airport(s),
try Southwest, which has its hub in Phoenix; I might fly
to Phoenix and drive from there. A longer drive than
from ABQ but less time in flight and maybe fewer changes.
Southwest is not listed in Travelocity etc.; check their
own website.

You should know that small airports in the mountain west
will be served mainly by propeller planes, many of them
single engine. And those flights go over some high sharp
mountains. Expect to feel airsick, even in good weather.
Mid winter, especially this winter, I would worry about
flights being cancelled due to bad weather, in Salt Lake
and Denver. Small plane commuter flights get cancelled
first, if only because they get low priority for de-icing
equipment. Not that those planes don't need it at least
as much as the big ones; airlines lose money faster when
they cancel larger flights.

My condolences re your cousin, and I hope you all make it
to the service in good order.

Very useful info, thanks

We found out the group that is going to cover their flight wants to fly
them to Denver and then to Cortez. We were all wondering if it would
be on some tiny plane... I've flown in a tiny plane twice and it was
terrifying both times. They are supposed to call with the details
tomorrow; I'll see if my parents would prefer to fly to Albuquerque and
drive instead. That's what my uncle recommended when we talked to him
today, also. I don't think the group that's covering their expenses
will care one way or the other and it's probably cheaper for them to do
it that way. Personally I'd just drive the whole thing - it's only 16
or so hours, I think. I hate flying. But I'm not going, so it's up to
them.

Thank you very much. And thanks to everybody else who's written either
here or in email. I sent out a notice to my boarders and my students
that lessons are cancelled until Feb 1, and I am so overwhelmed with
how kind everybody is being. I've got all sorts of offers to come help
me muck stalls!

take care,

Thank you Mary, and thank you Terry. Just a quick update: we got
hooked up with a group called Blue Ribbon Moms (not quite sure if
that's totally right but it's something like that) and they will fly my
parents out for the funeral for free. They are a group that
specializes in flying people around to see their loved ones when they
are on leave from military duty, and when there is a death, they help
out with that too. It's such a blessing, they are even going to get my
parents a hotel room for the week and a rental car. Plus, we had no
idea but there is actually an airport in Cortez. So they fly into
Denver, then into Cortez. I've flown into Denver a few times and it
was always pretty horrible, but I guess it's over with so much more
quickly than driving! I do hate to fly, though, and so does my mom, so
I don't know if she'll think this is good news or bad. I'm glad I have
to stay home and take care of the OBHorses. Flying, yuck.

We had tried to go to Cortez a few years ago, and we did take the
southerly route as Terry suggested. I don't recall if we thought that
would be a better drive or not - we wanted to stop in Vegas, so that
was our motivation. But when we got to Vegas, my dad broke his back
falling down in the motel shower. So we never made it, and I had no
idea it was such a horrible drive. When my aunt put me on the horse,
she lived in the Upper Penisula Michigan... Remote, but not
mountainous, as I recall.

thanks all,
cindi
