 | I tried doing umlaute using ALT-keypad number like so: ö = 148 but this is the only useful one I can reliably make. Other strange things happen - I get smileys, window list, change of window, zoom out... scary! Do I have to forget about Umlaute? resort to ever more scurrilous linguistic contortions trying to avoid them? US keyboard of course. WinXP
Thanks for any insights

What's the hex code? Let me see, 148 decimal is 94 hex, so try typing "94" and then pressing Alt-x ... hmm, looks like you need to consult a Unicode character map. I know C4 is Ä, and E4 should be ä, but didn't look far enough to find o with umlaut.

They kind of snuck in the Alt-x without much comment a couple of versions ago. Provided you can find out the Unicode value for a character, it works pretty well. Full UTF-16, so even Arabic or some other script which is included in Unicode. Of course, if your email encoding won't handle the character, you'll get the alert asking if you want to change to Unicode UTF-8 so that you can actually use that character ...
