 | One small quibble with the new beta - the "New page" button, which appears by default on the page bar, doesn't seem to go away when you right-click on it and remove it from the toolbar - or rather it goes away but comes back on the next reload of Opera.
Had to edit standard_toolbar.ini, removing the lines
[Pagebar Head.content] Button, 21193=New page,1
to get rid of it.
Does anyone else get this or is it just me doing something silly (or maybe to do with the way I installed)? Is there a better way to kill it permanently?
Build 913, version 8.0-20050104.4-shared-qt, running from the directory into which the .bz2 archive was unpacked using the 'opera' script.

Works fine here. Do other toolbar customizatios stick?

No, I tried adding buttons to the status bar and they went away on reload.
This was when I was running using the 'opera' script supplied in the ..bz2 archive - the one that says "Use this if you don't want to install Opera to any special location, but execute it from the extracted package or current location."
If, instead, I install opera "properly" using the 'install.sh' script and then run the resulting installation, the customisations stick OK.
Not a serious problem, as people will presumably do a proper install when it's intended for operational use - but it does rather limit the usefulness of the 'opera' script for testing purposes.

Do any other settings "take"? Sounds to me like Opera couldn't create a personal directory for you.

Yes, all the non-toolbar settings took and some of the toolbar ones, too - I only had trouble with removing the "New page" button and adding buttons to the Status bar.

The personal directory (called "usersettings") was created.
However, the problem seems to have gone away now. I've tried several times to recreate it by repeating the unpacking and customisations exactly as before, so far as I can remember, but haven't succeeded. I'm quite sure it *did* happen, and can't see any obvious way in which it might have been "user error" - but I suppose that, without a method of reproducing, there's no point in taking it further. One of these awkward "now you see it, now you don't" problems.

Maybe it was a session issue then. When you save a session, Opera remembers the complete state of the UI - including panels and toolbar buttons. If you use saved sessions and customize the toolbars, then your customizations will disappear if you start with a session that was saved before the change.

Don't think so - I don't use sessions at all. Thanks anyway.
I was wondering if the "Lock toolbars" setting in opera6.ini might somehow have got set to a non-zero value - ISTR there used to be a UI for that but I can't see it now. (But perhaps that would have made it impossible to change the toolbars at all, rather than causing the changes not to stick.) However, if that was the problem, it would also be necessary to explain how it's got reset to zero again. Wish I'd made a copy of opera6.ini at the point where toolbar changes were failing to stick.
