 | Gmail Sign In Gmail does not currently support your browser. See browser requirements for Gmail or sign in anyway.
We're sorry, but we don't seem to be compatible. Our software suggests that you're using a browser incompatible with Gmail. Gmail currently supports the following: Microsoft IE 5.5 and newer (download: Windows) Netscape 7.1 and newer (download: Windows Macintosh Linux) Mozilla 1.4 and newer (download: Windows Macintosh Linux) Mozilla Firefox 0.8 and newer (download: Windows Macintosh Linux) Safari 1.2.1 and newer (download: Macintosh)

Yep. This is well-known and not an Opera problem. It's a Google problem, and there does not appear to be any plan to change this behaviour.
Most annoying, I agree. Boo-hiss for Google! :-(

Particularly as Opera's 'Ad supported' version uses Google's adverts, so Google can't claim ignorance of Opera. I wonder what it is about Gmail that makes it incompatible with Opera?

They aren't ignorant of Opera. from GMail: click "Help" link at the top; click "Contact Us" on the left; click "Suggest a feature." Under "Helpful Additions" is the following feature: "Access Gmail with my Opera browser". That said, GMail works great with Opera 8b1 if you select the "log in anyway" link on the login screen.
However, having used Firefox for a while to use GMail, I now miss the AdBlock extension greatly.... (As I've mentioned several times on opera.wishlist.)

And the Firefox Gmail extension, which integrates in the status bar and shows you any new messages in Gmail.

GMail uses XMLHttpRequest. Which was not supported by Opera. So we brought some work forward, and the Opera 7.6/8 previews and beta have supported GMail for a few months now.

Thankyou :)) (Not that I expect to be using GMail).
