I like new Opera and I switched back from Firefox, but having some font
family or something non antialiased. For example: I found on
http://www.ati.com/products/catalyst/linux.html (The FAQ) non
antialiased fonts and all the fonts I set have antialiasing suppord
under Windows. How to make these fonts antialiased?

Thank you.

P.S. I would like you Opera guys to make 8 final with Linux traditional
font preferences as Linux distros doesn't come with Times New Roman,
Arial and so on. Make it to Bistream Vera Sans or something.

The CSS of ati seems to set helvetica as the font family for pretty
much everything. Most likely you have a helvetica font supplied by
the X server (that is not antialiased) and no helvetica fonts supplied
by the xft system (which can be antialiased).

It is possible to tell Opera not to use X fonts at all by adding
Enable Core X Fonts=0
to the [User Prefs] section of $HOME/.opera/opera6.ini. Do not edit
this file while Opera is running.

Just about anything that makes some pages hard to use... (Font
problems very seldom makes pages unusable. Sometimes ugly, but not
unusable. The worst cases I know of are some cases of unicode-encoded
east asian pages, where the "default" font chosen is in the wrong
language...)

You've set the correct path in prefs->multimedia->java path? And
"validate" says it's ok?

Maybe they do the same thing...

You don't have to. If Opera is told (by the web page) to use
helvetica, then opera will use whatever helvetica is available on the
system.

Fonts are a problem, and the way we handle it on linux isn't really
good enough. We have some plans we want to try, but as long as it
works mostly ok, there's just too many other things that are more
important.

You may want to try starting opera with the '-personaldir' option to
see what kind of difference that makes:

opera -personaldir some-new-opera-dir

This will cause opera to use "some-new-opera-dir" instead of
$HOME/.opera. If "some-new-opera-dir" does not exist, it will be
created, and opera will run as if you had never run it before. This
is an easy way to see what differences your settings makes. I don't
think it will make any difference for this problem, though.

Such as? :)

For instance, I noticed that Java which I got with my distro (Slackware
10.0) doesn't work with Opera, and works fine with Firefox and Mozilla.
Fortunately, I almost don't use Java so it's not an issue for me :)

I have that problem on some pages, and the ati page is not a problem for
me as I am full nVidia user.

Well, it didn't help :(

But thanks anyway.

BTW you did the great job till 8 Beta and I can't wait to see 8 final. I
thought I would never get back to Opera (I used it on Windows).

It's not important page for me as I'm total nVidia user (having nForce2
chipset and GeForce FX5200 graphics card), but I noticed the same
problem on some pages.

I don't know. I didn't set up Helvetica in Opera settings.

It didn't help, but thanks anyway. You did the great job in 8 beta and I
can't wait to see 8 Final. I'd like to send you my
$HOME/.opera/opera6.ini but the file has 13 pages (A4).
