 | Hello all
In the server name completion I use the prefix www but it doesn't work on something other than .com
for example if in the adress bar I type "sfr" I get to "www.sfr.com" but if i type "sfr.fr" I dont get to "www.sfr.fr" but to an error page saying that http://sfr.fr does not exist.
I know that http://sfr.fr does not exist but why doesn't opera try the prefix "www" to get me to "www.sfr.fr" ?
Thanks for the help.

The following is cut-n-pasted from the Opera7.54 help files.
======================
SERVER NAME COMPLETION When you enter a single word (e.g. "opera") in Opera's address field, Opera will: 1) Look for a bookmark nicknamed "opera" 2) Look for a computer in your local network called "opera" 3) Add prefixes (e.g. "www") and suffixes (e.g. "com") and look up "www.opera.com" Tip: You can enter comma-separated lists of prefixes and suffixes. Note: It takes time to try multiple combinations, so turn this feature off for faster browsing.

 | Thanks for the help,
Still it won't work, so the question remains, I have entered www in the prefix zone and if I type "sfr.fr" it won't get me to "www.sfr.fr"
Is there a fix or a workaround ?
Thanks

Add fr as a possible suffix in Opera's preferences Don't type sfr.fr, type sfr Opera will look for www.sfr.com first and then www.sfr.fr (unless you put fr ahead of com in the preferences)
Or ask the webmaster at sfr.com to sort out their zone file so requests without the www resolve.

fr is already on my suffix list and it still won't work unless I put the fr before the com in the suffix list, the problem with this site is that there is ALSO an "www.sfr.com" on top of the "www.sfr.fr" so i wanted opera to find "www.sfr.fr" while entereing only "sfr.fr"
The next problem is that this site is the 2ng bigger mobile phone company in france so i doubt VERY much they would listen to my complain about their zone file, it's already a good thing it works quite OK with opera so let's not ask for too much...

Create a bookmark to www.sfr.fr and give it the nickname of 'sfr' That takes priority over the prefix and suffix list.
Because sfr.fr could possibly be a real web address it'd be bad form if Opera automatically prefixed it with www. Also it's a lot of effort to avoid typing "www." in front of each address.

There's no reason why they should, as they've done nothing wrong. There's nothing that says every domain must resolve to an IP address, and though some companies do put an A record against their highest level domain they're certainly not doing anything wrong by not doing it.
The best solution is to get used to typing "www.". With practice most people will be able to type those four characters faster than Opera can do a DNS lookup (unless the DNS results are cached locally).

Goto Preferences> Network> Server name completion> then enter "fr,com" (sans quotes) in the Suffixes list -- and leave the Prefixes list alone (www). Also, ensure the "Try name completion" setting is checked ON. When finished, press OK, Apply, OK.
The next time you enter "sfr" into Opera's address field, Opera should find www.sfr.fr. Likewise, if you enter "opera", Opera will find www.opera.com

 | Ok, it's a good trick since you're searching the .fr before the .com so now it "works".
but why can't opera JUST search for a prefix if the suffix is included ?
For the record I still cant make him find "www.sfr.fr" when I enter "sfr.fr", and the problem is that there is also and "www.sfr.com" that is the international site which i don't care about.
It's good that opera searches for suffixes but it should know that if the suffix is already typed there is only need to search for a prefix, at least makes sense to me especially in the easy situation where the site without prefix does not exist.
Thanks

O. probably can't work out for sure whether it's a suffix or something in the middle of the fully qualified domain name. Although it could guess, of course.

Otherwise it would screw up a lot of things for users who mainly use cc.tlds which have 2nd level suffixes. (e.g. .com.au vs .com)
IOW, if you type a ., server name completion is disabled. -- Using M2, Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/m2/

Because Opera doesn't know that it isn't a complete address.
'foo' must be incomplete (or a local resource) but 'foo.bar' could be either a complete addresss or part of an incomplete address.
There is an domain name fr.com and it could in theory have a sub-domain called sfr. So www.sfr.fr.com could in theory be a web site. Would you like Opera to take you there when you type sfr.fr? No, of course you wouldn't.

Then what is the use of the "prefix" setting if it's not even TRYING ?
I know i can make a bookmark, type the www and so on, but what is the USE of the setting since it appears to do nothing if it's not on .com (or the first suffix you choose to include on your list)

It will try if you type a single word instead of a URL.
>I know i can make a bookmark, type the www and so on, but what is the USE >of the setting since it appears to do nothing if it's not on .com (or the >first suffix you choose to include on your list)
It will try _all_ the suffixes and _all_ the prefixes in your list until it finds ones that work, but only if you just type one word.
If you type a URL then it uses the URL. sfr.fr is a URL, not Opera's fault if it's a URL that doesn't resolve to a web site.
