I installed O8.8401 in new directories and then copied in the mail folder
from my 7.54 folder as is often talked about. I have just noticed that
the beta is updating the newsrc file in the 7.54 directories, not its own.

Bug?

Apparently this is by design. If you *copy* the directory, the
paths won't be updated. If you *move* the directory, the paths will
be updated. Opera detects that the path needs to be updated because
the file doesn't exist any longer.
This affects the incoming and outgoing options files and the
signature file. For news, the incoming options file contains the path
to the newsrc file, so it is affected as well.

So, if I want to keep the copied as a backup, I'd better rename the top
directory, yes?

Or manually update the paths after copying the Mail folder to its
new location.

Sorry, but sometimes it seems like it takes several whacks on the side of
the head with a rather large mallet before Opera folk get it...or admit it.

YOU have been telling US for some time now that all WE need do is COPY the
mail folder into the new directory. There were never any warnings, no
special instructions! I now have bad data. Apparently this is the
design?????? Oh, OK, yes I was born yesterday!

CLEARLY, this is a bug. CLEARLY, this was not tested. CLEARLY, by saying
we have to MOVE the mail directory YOU are saying YOU don't support
running two version of Opera on the same machine.

And YES, I know it's a beta. I just don't appreciate a bullshit answer
when IMNSHO a "We're sorry, that doesn't seem correct, we're looking into
it. Thanks for pointing this out." response would seem to be
appropriate. Or don't you want us to test beta releases?

/soapbox off/

Have a nice day!

Did you copy other files too? Clearly that would occur if you copied

Nope! Just the mail directory as often discussed in this forum. I
believe it is caused by this line in accounts.ini for the account# which
maps to my news account:
Incoming Options File=C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Application
Data\Opera\Opera8b1\Mail\incoming2.txt

That file (incoming2.txt) has this in it:
[settings]
newsrc_file=C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Application
Data\Opera\OPERA75\Mail\news.opera.com.newsrc
