Let the fence-mending begin. According to a Broadcasting & Cable
source in Washington, D.C., CBS News president Andrew Heyward, along
with Washington bureau chief Janet Leissner, recently met with White
House communications director Dan Bartlett, in part to repair chilly
relations with the Bush administration.
"Repair chilly relations"? Why don't they go into marriage
counseling
instead? I thought CBS reported the news. I thought that was their
job. Now they're admitting that they're really Bush's bitch all
along?
CBS News' popularity at the White House-never high to begin
with-plunged further in the wake of Dan Rather's discredited 60
Minutes story on George Bush's National Guard service.
What a farce! CBS has always done the same thing as all the other
networks - covering up Bush's National Guard cowardice and special
treatment. The one time they dared to try and do anything
differently, and tell the real truth, they were slapped down and took
it just like the bitches they are. Redmon fired Rather because he's
Bush's bitch, not because Bush didn't get preferential treatment.
Bush DID get prefferential treatment. That's the truth that CBS is
STILL too frightened to tell. CBS is like a battered wife who thinks
she is the blame for her husband beating her up.
An incentive for making nice is the impending report from the
two-member panel investigating CBS's use of now-infamous documents for
the 60 Minutes piece.
This is on the same level as government investigations of the media
in Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany. But instead of having the courage
to do what some courageous people in those countries did, CBS is glad
to give the 'heil BUsh' salute in penance.
Heyward was "working overtime to convince Bartlett that neither CBS
News nor Rather had a vendetta against the White House," our source
says, "and from here on out would do everything it could to be fair
and balanced." CBS declined to comment.
"Free and balanced" is code for capitulation to the far right
government establishment. We see here how government intimidation has
finally overcome the last vestiges of a free press in corporate
America. When getting along with government power becomes more
important than telling the truth about the government and those
running it, then the free press is dead. When all of the press has
finally knuckled under to the partisan and economic pressure from the
right, the press is no longer free. Their capitulation may seem
outwardly voluntary, but it is riddled with numerous little
capitulations and progressively toady behavior like this. Behavior
which itself was brought on by government pressure and intimidation.
Can anyone imagine Edward R Murrow going hat in hand to Senator
McCarthy, seeking to find a way to "repair our chilly relations?"
A free media that dies the death of a thousand cuts is just as dead as
the one overthrown by revolution or repressive laws. A dead media is
one that has repaired its chilly relations with a corrupt and
authoritarian, one party government.

No me. Even today there are plenty of other news organisations that
have reported unfavorable stories about Bush and they arent groveling.
Obviously there is something wrong with CBS news and it has
absolutly nothing to do with the government.
