 | Preliminary comment by MORRISSEY BREEN, Daisycutter Sports: Who would have thought it? The hated, militaristic, rogue (untiol yesterday, anyway!) Bush administration has stated that it will now focus on the "need to spread freedom". Let's enjoy reading about this radical new departure in U.S. policy.... Bush's inaugural speech focuses on need to spread freedom by Deb Riechmann and David Espo / The Associated Press The Albuquerque Tribune January 20, 2005
WASHINGTON - George W. Bush swore the presidential oath for a second term in turbulent times today and issued a sweeping pledge to spread liberty and freedom "to the darkest corners of the world."
"Our country has accepted obligations that are difficult to fulfill and would be dishonorable to abandon," said the president, who was the leader of an orchestrated litany of lies leading to the illegal and brutal invasion of Iraq in a first term marked by terrorist attacks, the Nazi-style obliteration of the city of Fallujah, and widespread torture and mayhem being committed by United States troops.
In a speech delivered before a chilly throng spilling away from the steps of the Capitol, Bush said he would place the nation on the side of the world's oppressed people.
"All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: The United States will not ignore your oppression or excuse your oppressors. When you stand for your liberty, we will stand with you."
BREEN COMMENTS: This is FANTASTIC news! Bush is committing the U.S. to stand beside the people of Palestine!
...... he packed the first speech of a new term with multiple references to freedom and liberty, references to God - and a reminder of Abraham Lincoln's long-ago admonition. "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves; and, under the rule of a just God, cannot long retain it," he quoted the 16th president.
BREEN COMMENTS: Look out, Israel ---- it looks like your only friend and main arms dealer and atrocity-excuser is pulling the plug!
The spread of freedom and liberty were the oldest ideals of America, Bush said. "Now it is the urgent requirement of our nation's security and the calling of our time."
BREEN COMMENTS: This is incredibly exciting. We welcome this radical new departure in U.S. foreign policy.
"We are led, by events and common sense, to one conclusion. The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands," he said.
"The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world."
He said freedom "warms those who feel its power, it burns those who fight its progress, and one day this untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world."
BREEN COMMENTS: There are those who say that George W. Bush is a liar, a hypocrite and a scoundrel, and that he has the moral stature of a bed-bug. That might well seem a reasonable view to take on Mr Bush, given his (let's face it) abominable performance so far. But we at Daisycutter Sports Inc. say: GIVE HIM A CHANCE. Right now, he has said, quite clearly, that he will commit himself to freeing the Palestinian people and dealing to their oppressors. In spite of his history of grievous lying, we are prepared to take the president at his word.
Now let's see if he delivers...

 | He has delivered you Afghanistan and he will soon deliver Iraq - if freedom is taken to mean democracy. The interesting question really has nothing to do with the United States - it is what will oppressed people do with the freedom they are given.
The United States with its unmatched military power can remove just about any dictator it wants to. It can free oppressed people from the most horrible tyrants. But there is something the United States cannot do, and that is free people from themselves.
I welcome Bush's pledge to advance freedom around the world but surely the president of the United States will understand that democracy does not equal freedom. Democracy is after all one of the tyrannys which the founders tried to protect America from.
Bush said that he doesn't wish to impose an american style government on anyone and certainly there is no need to impose a replica of the american system. But if "freedom" is the goal then the individualism which exists in the west must be brought to these countries. It is not enough that people choose their own leaders. They must choose leaders that uphold the principles of freedom.

 | A couple of absolute pearlers from Tilly, who wrote:

Would these "polls" by any chance be connected to the people who predicted that the Iraqi people would "welcome" the invading U.S. troops? Would these "polls" have any connection to the people who repeatedly, soberly, authoritatively assured us that, yes, there were "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq, which could be "DEPLOYED AGAINST GREAT BRITAIN IN 45 MINUTES"? Who are the pollsters? Hill & Knowlton, the notorious atrocity fantasists of 1990? Rumsfeld & Cheney and Associates?
I think we should be told.

Ha! Now THAT statement might just garner Tilly the coveted last nomination spot for the Daisycutter Sports Post of the Year contest. I'm going to be forwarding it to the committee, and I'd say the committee members will be accepting it, if Tilly fails to provide some evidence, other than blind willfulness. for that remarkable statement.
Here we go --- I'll even set it up for her:
APPARENTLY LOONEY STATEMENT: "Sunni resistance can be worn down."

 | He wants to spread libertarianism. Good for those libertarians worldwide and all their conservative buddies. Let them spread their ideology till kingdom come.
But if he will remember one fact and that is Sunni Arab Resistance(SAR) is not defeatable.
No where in the world has SAR been completely defeated. Just look at Gaza, West Bank, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Kashmir, Philippines, Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia etc etc.

The latest polls in Iraq show that 80% of Sunnis intend to vote .They aware that if they don't they will have no say whatsoever in the future constitution. Sunni resistance can be worn down. It has been to a large extent in Afghanistan. When they discover they have everything to lose by not participating most of them think again. All the indigenous Iraqi Sunnis care about in Iraq , is the loss of the wealth and power they had under Saddam. They can't swallow the fact it has ended. It has nothing whatsoever to do with their Sunni sect of Islam, they were secular under SH not fundamentalists Currently Theyfind it convenienient to work together with the Sunni Islamist insurgents .There is strength in numbers.

 | I notice many "freedom loving" brain-damaged alcoholics or ex-alcoholics rarely mention the phrase "Healthy Discipline"
George is no exception.
