In April the two of us will be doing the B&B, driving, holiday in Ireland.
Dingle is in our itinerary and I'm questioning if I should attempt to drive
the Conor Pass road? Would appreciate all advice.

I drove over the Conor Pass road in December. It was fine, no problem.
Be careful if it looks cloudy or misty ahead though. April should be
fine, and, despite what others might have said about tourist traps
(which is possibly true in August), Dingle will be OK.

There are numerous amazing places to see in the vicinity, Slea Head and
the Blaskets, and in particular Coomeenoule, which is just before Dun
Chaoin if you're driving around the head in a clockwise direction. Don't
be tempted to swim because it is dangerous, and be wary of the tide if
you're walking on the beach. The weather will be unpredictable (i.e.
posibly rainy / stormy) and you will find it cold, assuming you're from
Florida.

When you're in Dingle, Ashes Pub serves
excellent food from 12-3 ? (possibly later) and is staffed by a tribe of
beautiful women, the chowder is pretty substantial & the salads very
good. It's also a B&B but I've never stayed there. Be sure to visit
Murphy's Icecream - it's a must! Then there's a plethora of more formal
places to eat in Dingle, some expensive, some less. There's the pubs
too. If you're prepared to be stared at for a few minutes, Foxy John's
is often good for music. Being stared at is just a part of being a
visitor to Dingle, I get stared at all the time and I'm Irish, albeit
from Dublin. Tigh TP's in Ballydavid is a great place to watch the sun
go down (if it isn't cloudy).

I have a few photos taken in the area last October (I spend a lot of
time down there, working & holidaying) - follow the links below:

If you have any other questions, just ask, I'll help if I can. The
peninsula is an amazing place.

Last year we drove up in the burren in a Ford Focus. I didn't have any
problems with narrow roads. Only the larger towns, like Limerick, posed a
problem. Hertz is providing a small Fiat this time. I use an older Ford
Escort here in Florida and am used to a small car.

Yes, we are from Florida, and were cold in Ireland. We lived in NW Indiana
before coming to Florida and knew how to dress for the cold. It was the
constant biting wind that got to us.

The places you name above, are the ones we want to see. Thanks for the
links to the pictures.

Thanks,
Jimmie

I drive through the pass several times a year and have done so in various
weather conditions. I drive a large family saloon (a Ford Mondeo).
It' s no problem. Go for it.

And Dingle is a good place to stay with numerous pubs and very good
restaurants.

Or, in American parlance, a compact car.

If the weather is good, and the visibility clear, then do it! Absolutely
stunning!

Me personally, I would 'pass' on Dingle. It just looked like a tourist trap
to us, was filled to the brim with coach parties and offered no appeal to us
whatsoever. We didn't even bother to stop, instead we carried on and had a
great afternoon relaxing on Inch Strand with our dogs, feasting on a picnic
prepared for us by a local pub. Bliss.

....I hasten to add that this was in August, so weather was a bit more
predictable...and perhaps the peak of Dingle's tourist season...

Depends partly on the size of your car. If there's only two of you, you
have a small car, and the weather is good, go for it. If your car is a
"normal" sized car for you (I assume from the tampabay you're in Florida),
I'd skip it. The rest of the ring of Kerry will scare the hell out of you
enough while driving. :) (Family came over to visit us here, and we had
a Kia Sedona minivan. We skipped Conor Pass. :))
