Linux support would be really nice.

The great leap forward would be running dBase CGI scripts on Linux. We run
Linux servers and all dBase data is stored there most successfully. I
don't yet find KDE or Gnome robust enough for general office use. However,
this post is sent from Knode on Mandrake Linux 10.0 Powerpak+.

I suspect that any port to Linux would be held up because of the BDE. To my
knowlege the BDE will not work. I wonder if you turn off the BDE and access
tables via OLEDB or another method, would this allow dBASE to run on Linux?

I suspect that there is a lot more than just the BDE, although that
will be big.

ALL Windows calls will need to be re-written to work in X-Windows, the
file structure (with its permissions) is different, the whole
underlying OS with all its function calls is very different. I saw
the other post that mentions ActiveX. Any technology that relies on
Windows-based code would need to be re-written. No trivial task.

The only way I see to make the dBase runtime mult-platform without a
lot of work would be to write it in Java. As much as I like Java for
its multi-platform capabilities, I just don't see that happening
within my lifetime.

Rob

But.... Linux support would still be really nice.......

You mean *after* a dBASE port so the runtime and the app's exe (for the moment
let's forget any additional dll's and ActiveX's you might use in your apps) run
on Linux? Seems like it should.

So once the grid is made to work with arrays, we can conceivably write our own
(simple) database engine.

Do you remember the Unix compiler for Clipper code? What database engine were
they using?
