 | Once upon a time I came across an application that was supposed to tap into a server online with the stipulation that one can download a stream of NYSE and other market quotes in real time as they are posted online. I understand that the assess may not be entirely free.
My questions are: Has anyone heard about it? Do you have any information about the dll's used? In the example I saw which I cannot immediately find they used the oleAutoClient class.
If you have any information then where can I find the formats to read the stream?
I am continuing my own search and perhaps I can answer some of these questions in a day or two but any response will be appreciated.
Thanks.

 | Hi Brandon,
Just a suggestion, you could drop an activex web browser on a form to display a real time stock ticker. I did a quick search and there seem to be many examples of html/perl/java code for doing this. There were many freeware examples available.

I've not heard of this. Did a search a while back on trying to get market values off the net for some investment accounting stuff I have. The only thing I found was the ability to set up a portfolio and download that information.
If you find something, report back.

Here are a few links that I've found. But I haven't had time to work with any. It looks like all of the example code is using SOAP.

After I posted the original post I found an application in my archive called "dQoute" by Dave. There is no source code and this is a drawback. I ran it and it did not work. When you use it as recommended at the command prompt C:>dquote MSFT the error message it gives is: symbol not found. When you give two symbols as argument: C:>dquote MSFT BAC it gives "computation error 57." I could not find out what error 57 means. I wish I had the source code for the beast.
This is the readme (dQuote.txt) file accompanying the application:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ dQuote - Display Stock Quote Info Copyright (c) 2000,2001 by WebGeek Inc. (dave@basicguru.com) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've got a satellite dish at work and we keep the TV tuned to CNBC all day long. I don't know much about the market or investing (I've just got mutual funds and CD's). However, the current IPO craze has got me fascinated and I've started learning about investing.
I am also playing the "Investment Challenge", an online trading game by Tech TV that gives you an imaginary $500,000 to invest over the course of a month. The person who has made the most money at the end of the month wins various prizes (laptops, computers, etc.)
It's a pain to visit CNBC, CNNFN, or most of the other sites to look up stock values all the time. Particularly when I don't keep a browser open all the time. However, as we all know, I do keep DOS boxes open all day, so I wrote a utility to get me current price info on stocks.
This utility uses a free service to download stock information, so the data can be delayed up to 20 minutes (fine for my needs). To use it, simply type in a stock symbol name after the program name:
dQuote msft
will return stock information on Microsoft. You *must* know a valid stock symbol. Multiple symbols can be passed on the command line seperated by spaces:
dQuote msft ibm
All of the data is displayed through the STDOUT device, so it can be redirected to a file or a web site. To use dQuote on your web site, place the .EXE in your cgi-bin directory and pass the symbol on the URL command line:
http://www.yoursite.com/cgi-bin/dquote.exe?msft http://www.yoursite.com/cgi-bin/dquote.exe?msft+ibm
If you have any questions or comments, please email them to me.
dQUOTE is freeware. There is no charge for personal use.
Thanks!

Version 1.61 update -- Nasdaq updated to IIS 5.0 which broke some internal code in dQuote.
Version 1.60 update -- Nasdaq changed the name of their domain which broke previous versions of dQuote. This has been fixed.
Any further insight and revelations are welcome.
Thanks.

Sounds like something for dBASE being the name is dQUOTE. I check the old internet news groups.

No, I can't do anything with it.
