 | According to Heise news (http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/54817) (German), Mircosoft stops Windows XP on Itanic. This isn't a surprise, since nobody bought Windows XP on Itanic, and even HP doesn't make Itanic workstations anymore. And Windows is not a server operating system (though they continue to maintain Windows Server 2003 for Itanic - I doubt that many systems have been sold).
The last straw that Itanic ever becomes a mainstream CPU is now cut. But I think that's no news ;-).

I do not think that the amount of sales is a criteria for the quality of a processor (do your remember dec alpha ?). Maybe you mean by Itanic as itanium 1, and everybody knows the story. Now, intel and HP produces itanium2, and trust me, it is a good high performance processor. Many HPC are based on such procs (look at top 500).

I wouldn't argue that Itanic 2 isn't good for high performance computing, but it's not a mainstream processor, and won't become one. The only processor architecture that is in the top 5 that you can consider a mainstream processor architecture is the PowerPC architecture (place 1 and 4).
