Hello all,

I recently received a present (motorcycle jacket with an approx. $150 value)
from my brother who lives in the USA. He shipped it United States Postal
Service and it was delivered by Canada Post to my door. But before the
Postman turned the package over to me I was charged Provincial Taxes and
GST.

Is this correct? Are gifts from the USA subject to Provincial Taxes and
GST?

Thank you.

Yes. Any gift over a $60 get hit.

If it were not a gift, the entire ammount would be taxable.

Be sure that only the ammount over $60 was taxed, otherwise the gift
was not recognized as such, and you can apply to have this corrected,
with proof that it was a gift, and not a mail-order purchase by you.

On a gift of that value, yes.

It could have been worse. Had he shipped by UPS, there also would have
been customs brokerage fees.

Very true. Anyone that uses UPS for transborder shipping is nuts. I
had a package delivered that, after fees and taxes, cost almost as
much as the item. I have had things mailed by USPS and never got
charged a dime by CCRA.
