As I get ready for my first meeting with a combined pack, I am thinking
about somethign else.

Summer..... this weather can do it.

As far as i know, there is no pack, or group that still opperates once the
summer comes around. In all of the areas(districts) that I have been in,
there is no groups that run in the summer.

Why not?

I think about it, and i do have a few ideas.

1) Leaders dont want to do it, they want to spend it with their families.
Can't argue with that.

2) Most groups meet in schools, of which they cannot meet in during the
summer. I know that of the 3 areas i have been in, there are groups that
meet in churches, of which they dont mind you meeting during the summer.

I think that if we all met throughout the summer, we would have better
retetion, as it would not be a question of whether they want to join next
year, it is do they want to continue next week/month.

Any time youth are away from somethign, whether it is
school/scouting/sports.... they will think about whether they want to join
up once it restarts, but if it doesnt stop, or break, they wont have that
opportunity to think about it.

I am not suggesting the regular weekly meetings in the summer. I am
suggesting that we all, myself included figure out how to do biweekly
scouting activities that will accomodate as many of the youth's scheduales
as possible.

....just somethign to think about....

There are groups that do run camps in the summer and hold meetings

Actually, many leaders would just as soon go to camp for a week and run
away from their families. :-))

You can meet in a park in the summer. On the beach, anywhere.

My experience was that you get lower attendance in the summer.
Families take holidays, relatives come visiting, kids get signed up for day
camps, etc.

It's been done. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I think your priority right now should be having a pack at all.
First, work on building up your pack to at least 12 kids.
Then worry about how to keep them.

Camps, yes, we have one in the middle of the summer that is Area Wide. They
get about 30-40 youth out.

But then they would have to go to marrage counselling....

Not in any areas that I have been in

That is almost solved. I am "bunking" with another pack, whom has about 18
kids. Likely next year i will continue to be a seperate pack but stay bunked
in until we have 2 additional fulltime leaders and at least have 12 kids. No
Less will do.

That sounds like a personal problem to me .... ;-)

That's not bad, thta what we were getting for spring district camps. ind
you, the district winter camp draws usually 40-60 kids in -20°C weather.
Go figger. I guess for Vancouver kids, that kind of cold is a curiosity

Nononono, they do that to prevent marriage counseling.
Fondness grows with distance ...

Mike, don;t get me started. That is not a solution, that is a delay in the
execution. Don't wait for the govenor to call. Go and use that time to
get yourself a real Pack.

No, less will not do.
You're a Scout, oyu don't "make do", you do it right.

Area wide there is about 150-200 youth.

It doesnt matter one way or another to me. I could move to the group that I
am bunking with. Or, I could stay with the group I am with now, and once we
get big enough, seperate.....or is that a bad thing?

I've done meetings in summer with both Guides and Scouts....

I've had it work great - and I've had it fizzle out. I found it really
depended on the neighbourhood I lived in - on what the families did over
summertime...

You really have to watch for Leader burnout though.... when I did it - my
groups shut down for about 5 or 6 weeks at Christmas time.... All of
December and the first week of January.... everyone gets so busy then
anyway with other stuff....

And I did do a week or 2 off in July....
