Back in the 1970s I worked for a large American computer company
called Univac. It has since merged with Burroughs to become Unisys.

We were trying to get the Vancouver General Hospital in Canada to buy
a Univac 1100 series computer. They basically told us to get lost
because the software available for the Univac computers was designed
for American hospitals. That software had no interest in medical
records. All it was interested in was billing the patient for every
last aspirin. In Canada, patients are not billed, so there is no paper
work, which is part of the secret why Canadians get so much more
health care for their dollar. Go into an American hospital, you will
find rooms full of clerks.

While I worked for Univac, I also learned that every bank and credit
union in the USA had its own private dishonest way for computing
interest, and that they usually considered the algorithms proprietary.
I certainly hope that has changed since then. These had to be fudged
individually to install generic financial software.

How about a swap?

We'll give you Minnesota if you'll give us Alberta.

Alberta is the most American province, and Massachusetts is the most
Canadian state. Perhaps if you threw in Oregon too.
