my family was living in Port Alberni when the Tidal wave hit in 1964 - Dad
was on the DEW line and mom had elected for us to live here because she had
family living here - Port Alberni (where I live today) is a community of
steep hills - the only flat areas are close to the water - otherwise the
damage could have been a lot worse than it was. people who were here at the
time of the Tidal wave still remember it - there was lots of loss and
tragedy - but no loss of life in the community - I can't imagine how much
worse the experience and how much more traumatic - if there had been the
loss of any lives never mind on the scale of lives that have been
experienced in Asia at this time. As a community we were very grateful for
the assistance that we got - from many outside sources - my father managed
to get in touch with us through a HAM radio operator who drove over the hump
to be able to see us in person and report reliably to my Dad that we were
all well.
During experiences like this - it would be nice to think that we are
citizens of the world - and would help each other out - not focus on
pointing out what we may have done inadequately to contribute to the
situation we find ourselves in. There is always time for recriminations and
arm chair governing when the immediate danger and assistance needed has been
addressed.

My dad worked out of search and rescue bk in 64 out of Jericho beach. I
was young and don't
remember any part of the tidal wave.
Busy playing on home made stilts and home made skate boards...swinging off
the willow trees like Tarzan....and
playing cheetah since I vocally could imitate cheetah perfect....lol

Claire;
In addition to seeing more posts from you this week than I remember all
year, you have become quite wordy. Looks good on you. You do this so seldom
that I forget to say Hi when I see you post. HI. there, I said it.. Don't
want to get long winded, I am way too shy and soft spoken for that ;-)

....No drinking and driving tonight...

......A woman drove me to drink. I never properly thanked her.

Not to place a fine line on it but NFLD was not part of Canada in
1929.
