 | Whatchaget?Whatchaget?Tellus... Inquiring minds want to know... (I have the Moosemilk made now, typing may appear slurred to some)
Wireless Router you say.. kewl.. Now I can run two PCs in the NCR as well as at home.. oh, another Wireless Card? Hmm.. Methinks I might need a second laptop to go with that..
Sheesh.. Santa was good.. I was better. I broke even about $2000 and it still looks like only a few gifts I purchased. I gotta stop getting multiple gifts worth more than 100 each. Well, the kids are kinda happy, my son is ecstatic, with a new Color TV, new 17 inch monitor, DVD Burner, and a bunch of other gifts. My daughter, who's computer BIOS was out of date, got a new 80Gig HD, DVD/CD-RW and a bunch of gifts, and with her birthday just a few weeks away, there is another 150 item left to add to the collection. Grandson doesn't know what to play with. There is nothing but electronics and 5+ toys.. Except he just got past the 3+ toys (just turned 4), and he is up playing his game boy, and looking at the hundreds of dollars of exciting toys. Only the FatCat named Buddy, is happy and content with less than a 10 gift and a bottle of Pounce treats. Now he just lays in the middle of the kitchen floor and yawns (under the feet of the crazy lady making the turkey dinner), so, yea. Was a good Christmas. I'll have to give going out more than one night a week, til the budget turns the more pleasing color of Black again.
Hope y'all had a guten Christmas. Sorry about taking all the gifts here..
Here's something I got from Hugh Moore:
Top 10 Santa Pick-Up Lines
10. Hey Babe, when was the last time you did it in a sleigh? 9. Wanna see my 12-inch elf? 8. I`ve got something special in the sack for you! 7. Ever make it with a fat guy with a whip? 6. I know when you've been bad or good--so let's skip the small talk, sister! 5. Some of my best toys run on batteries... 4. Interested in seeing the "North Pole"? (Well, that's what the Mrs. calls it ...) 3. I see you when you`re sleeping and you don`t wear any underwear, do you? 2. Screw the "nice" list I`ve got you on my "naughty" list! 1. Wanna join the "Mile High" club?

Top Ten Signs you've Hired a Bad Department Store Santa !
10. He recently starred in film called The Full Santy. 9. Asks all the mothers, "How 'bout a little lap action for mommy?" 8. Was recently suspended from NBA for choking his coach. 7. Beard catches on fire whenever he lights his crack pipe. 6. Every few minutes, his beard rustles, and you hear a muffled meow. 5. When kid asks for a bike, he says, "Good luck -- your parents look like cheap-ass bastards." 4. He's doubled over, gasping for breath, after the second "Ho." 3. Amuses kids by demonstrating the "sleeper hold" on an elf. 2. His "beard" consists of a dozen styrofoam peanuts glued to his face. 1. Always starts off by asking, "You ain't Jewish, are ya?"

Why Santa can't possibly be a man:
a. Men can't pack a bag b. Men would rather be dead than caught wearing red velvet. c. Men would feel their masculinity is threatened... having to be seen with all those elves d. Men don't answer their mail e. Men would refuse to allow their physique to be described even in just as anything remotely resembling a "bowl full of jelly" f. Men aren't interested in stockings unless somebody's wearing them g. Having to do the Ho-Ho-Ho thing would seriously inhibit their ability to pick up women h. Finally, being responsible for Christmas would require a commitment.

Hmmm. A stocking full of goodies from my daughter, a box of chocolates and a cheque from my parents, and a $20 tip from my customer today!
My daughter made her first turkey dinner (splendid job, I might add) and hosted brunch for five adults plus two dogs. My charter ran from 8:30 am to 11 am and from 7:30 pm til 10:15 pm. My dog is sleeping over at my daughter's tonight, so I don't have to get up early to put her out tomorrow morning.
Not bad at all. Now all I need is Rasta to fix up my computers so I have some more space on my hard drives and I'll be all set.
Merry Christmas! Susan

I got black socks ( whoop de doo).
I also got a power drill, skilsaw, and a jigsaw. I think the family is trying to tell me something, like : GET RID OF MY OLD TOOLS BEFORE THEY KILL ME !!!
Ya think they're refering to the yardsale skilsaw that someone put a common household, 2 prong electrical cord on? Or maybe the drill that usually works, but makes a nasty sound when it dies done during shut off ?
I heard a song on the radio today that was great. It's name is something like "Quit giving me crap for christmas". I smiled through the whole thing.

You seem a bit unhappy, Tom. Perhaps you could trade in your black socks, power drill, skilsaw and jigsaw for a camera. Prices have come down considerably, so you might only have to trade in one or two power tools with the socks.
Who is going on strike? Why have the last couple of weeks been a waste of time?
I didn't get everything I wanted for Christmas, either, and can't afford to go shopping on Boxing Day. I've checked my stocking many times, but there's still no perfect man in there for me.
I am alive, employed and my dog loves me, so life isn't all bad.

 | I'm feeling better now. I was considering doing the switch of stuff for the camera, but it was the mother and mother in law that gave me the stuff, and wifey dear thinks it would be in very bad form to return ( or pawn) them for something else.
"sigh"
I usually handle things like this a bit better, but it kind of took me by surprise. It floors me that the one thing I really wanted was not considered, but to blow money on tools that I already have, and don't use much now that those projects are done.....???
It's kind of like giving scuba gear to a non swimmer golfer.
Until my camera got smashed last fall, I was averaging between 100-400 photos per project when ever I got the chance to go do some shoots, and they weren't the easiest pics to take sometimes either ( but fun).
We looked at some ideas for maybe getting a camera sooner, but it's gonna be tough( Nope, not telling).
Tina is in a union, and they expect the government will not eccept whatever new contracts are being made up for the next couple of years or something. I don't know all the details, but we're budgetting for the 'just in case ' senerio that might happen by March.

That's tough. I don't belong to a union - and I only have me in my house to worry about. School bus driving is seasonal, but we know what the "season" is right from the start.
I don't think that it's bad form to exchange a present if you already have the item in question.
If you watch the for sale newsgroups like ott.for-sale you might find a camera secondhand that meets your needs for a good price. Digital cameras have come down in price so fast that people are upgrading and selling off their older ones. Are you looking for a good basic one or one with all the bells and whistles?
On another note, how did your camera get smashed? I'm sure there's a story there.
Hope you can work it all out, Tom.

 | Oh, it's a 'cute' little story. I wasn't mad about it...total accident.
I got my two little guys ready for school, drove them, and for the upteenth time reminded them to grab their back packs off the front seat. For once they listened. I was ten minutes away from the school when I tried to check my camera batteries...no camera. It was either on the shelf at home, or at the school, snagged by a backpack.
It was at the school, returned to the office. It was found during final morning bell, after probably a dozen feet kicked it throughout the school.
Viewing screen smashed, brains scrambled....total write off.

Ouch!
That's tough - you can't blame anyone.
I assume it wasn't covered by insurance - I know that my dad's new one is covered by the insurance that's part of his credit card for at least a year - or that it wasn't worth making a claim.
Maybe the union won't go on strike and you'll get your camera sooner rather than later.
Happy New Year! Susan

 | OK, nevermind Tom, or as "Toni" would say: "belay my last", smashed doesn't count as NOT WORKING. I am just getting around to reading this full thread, rather than preview of the top portions only..
Sorry about your Camera Loss. Mine was a little more durable, it was dropped at Karaoke night. Poor guy, that did the dropping, felt terrible (offered to pay, somehow) but I said, wait til I assess the situation sober, and it turned out only the case had a screw sheared off. A piece of Scotch Tape to hold the metal case together, and it works just like it did when it was new..
on a little aside.. Kodak was good to me. Within months of purchasing the camera, the plastic battery pack clip broke (Changing batteries so often work it down) and the camera would not work without the battery pack strapped in securely. I wrote Kodak, telling them how pleased I was with their camera (really was) that it was so reasonably priced (at the time) and yet took such incredible pictures. Unfortunately, for want of a plastic clip, the camera was rendered useless. I asked if they could provide a part number, or some idea where I could order this part. Without any response, LOOMIS showed up the next day, with a parcel. (I missed it, so I signed the card to allow them to drop it off the next day), it showed up, but you could clearly see the tire print on the envelope, where a driver ran over the package. I called LOOMIS. They wanted to know how much it cost.. I said KODAK sent it FREE, oh, fine, they were off the hook.. no cost to them.. YEAH RIGHT!!! , so I wrote Kodak again, thanking them for their prompt and freewill replacement, however, sadly, they did not choose a reputable carrier (LOOMIS is not my friend) and without another word, a 10 sq in box arrived a few days later, full of those adorable little styro peanuts, and a little plastic battery pack in the middle, still in that camera, still working, still held together with the same Scotch Tape.. Still like the pictures it takes. Limited features, but it works fine. My Canon was not so good. The eyepiece focus falls off track, and you cannot look through the eyepiece to take pictures. You have to use the viewer (which is harder on batteries), but hey, soon as I recover from Christmas Expenses, I am buying the next model up , of that same Canon, about the A80 model. The speed of reset between pictures is instant, and the quality is great. I used the mini movie features just for fun, didn't need them, I have my own video camera.
OK, you can see I have been too busy to be in the newsgroups for a few days.. Now you can't shut me up.. Well, I have work to do today, the snow is everywhere.. Did I mention we had a second big blizzard of 04? White Juan in Feb 04, and this stuff within 48 hours.

Poor Rasta. You went home to escape the cold and snow here, only to have it follow you. At least you didn't get the -30C day down east.
How much snow did you get? Not as much as White Juan 04, right?

Cold enough to crystalize the masculine apparatus off a polar bear.
> How much snow did you get? Not as much as White Juan 04, right?
Much like any other Blizzard, its not the amount, its how it comes down. There was supposed to be an average of 50cm but you could walk a bare sidewalk for ten feet, then waist deep snow all around. More than enough to fill the boots, sometimes over the knees. Sometimes drifts much higher. But it blew in under sheds, found a small crack and put snow in my garage, and sheds. Piled against the door til it was opened, and filled the hinges, allowing them to freeze.
There was enough.
.... No, no, no. The dog and sled is my WINTER car!

Really? Did you meet a number of polar bears without their "masculine apparatus", Rasta? How much rum did you share with the bear before you checked?

Blowing snow is the worst. It always piles up in the wrong places - like the driveway or sidewalk - rather than on the lawn where you wouldn't have to shovel it.

Its like that time I met the Talking Seal. Yea, having a few drinks sure ruins your credibility. I did mention that the Seal was, in no way, a match for a conversationalist like me. Eventually I got tired of saying H-E-L-L-O to the Seal, and said GOODBYE.. I did notice he didn't bother to parrot that word..

I understand why people use Snow fences to direct the blowing snow. The concept I have trouble with, is how we predict which way to turn them when the wind switches direction, to keep that snow going where we want it. It would be easier to make a new walkway to the Garage, just a few feet over, than to shovel through that waist deep crap everytime we have snow..

Hmmmm. I'll have to watch for the talking creatures around you when I pour you back into my truck after a night at O'Brien's.

Snow fences work fine as long as the wind doesn't change direction. A couple of rows of corn left behind along the edge of a farmer's field does the same thing. I think that you should put up a covered walkway to the garage - like those plastic garages. Means you wouldn't have to shovel the walkway at all... Then you can put up another garage to cover your driveway right to the road.

I have no choice but to go with the covered walkway,. I cannot get the corn kernels into the soil, it appears to be frozen. I have no idea how long these Corn Snow Fences take to grow.. Or when to start planting them.

You're right, it's too late (or too early) to plant the corn for a snow fence. May seems to be the best time to plant, but you can't mow the new shoots or cut down the corn over the summer if you want it to be a snow fence. I'll show you some in farmers' fields if you come outside in the cold Ottawa winter in the daytime.

But do dress - the construction workers are right outside the window sometimes, aren't they?

Ohhh, that might be fun! You mean I could have a date for New Years Eve? Come on, Paul, bring Rebecca and your ice cleats (freezing rain here now) and lets go party!
The saying is "in vino, veritas", but in your case, Rasta, I think it should be "in rum, truth".

It would be a long drive in lousy weather today, so I'll forgive you, Paul.
I don't want to share your bed (sorry if I got your hopes up), just spend some time in the company of friends. Maybe you could bring along a buddy for me?

 | Tom im so sorry for the loss of your camera... i know how devistateing that can be. I myself have many cameras, to date i have 3 digital ones my latest one is a Konica minolta z3 i have not read the full book on it as yet but it has all kinds of neat stuff that i can use while takeing pictures. My hobby is takeing action shots of dogs doing agility and that requires a fast focus and shutter speed which this camera has in abundance. The one i had been useing before that was a fuji f401 it was good but not good enough if i am going to make some money from this hobby. I wish i knew of a way to help you out with your camera dilema but short of sending you my brand new one (NOT A HOPE IN HELL) i dont know what to do. | Tom, will the camera not still work without the viewer. I do not use my viewer very often. I take all my digital pictures with the eye piece. I view them only once in awhile. I What camera is it that you wanted to upgrade too.
My opinion ..trade off Xmas gifts you will not use or enjoy and enjoy the one you would use.

 | Tom, will the camera not still work without the viewer.
Nope, the brain of the camera is frazzled. I'm just going to save up and get another one ( and exchange a few of the presents too).
It'll all work out. These are the pictures I'd been taking with it..... A few of the pics are vidcaps, and others gave me from halloween. The old places are from the camera.

some here too...
http://community.webshots.com/album/92438918jScuoE The grouped pics are vidcaps, the large are digital camera. There are about 12 -16 pages in 4 albums of these abandoned houses that I've taken. The menu bar on the left has many albums related to military brats past home locations. Those I did not take with a digital, and MANY were sent in for the project.

 | Tom; I was not following the whole thread of the broken camera thingie, but something occurred to me, that might be of help.
My sister had a real expensive digital camera, that could use a TV to display the pictures (just plug the RCA-Phono connection into a TV), once setup for external TV view, the menu features were not visible on the camera to change it back. Methinks Mr Tom Collins may have played a part, but she didn't remember if she set the Viewer back to camera display. So, we plugged it back into the TV (where it worked) brought up the menu, and switched it back to internal camera view. Works fine..
Anything similar on your end? You could be so lucky... Just a shot in the dark.. Actually, I knew it would not work, I just haven't posted anything for two days, and I was itching to go.. Speaking of pictures.. Dora, they didn't come yet..

In the intangibles department, I made out like a bandit. My daughter is home for the holidays and she just got engaged Tuesday night to a fabulous young man who will make a great son-in-law. He has short hair, doesn't do drugs and is very gainfully employed, so all is right with the universe. I have a new love in my life and could never have expected to be this happy again. She's coming over for a sleep over tonight (I get the top bunk) and we will cocoon in here for the next 2 days. I bought her a pair of panties with "Merry Christmas" written on one leg and "Happy New Year" on the other. I told her I will be up to see her in between seasons. :):) I'm just starting a new job with lots of potential so, all in all, life is coming back into focus after a few years of struggle and turmoil.
To those of you who have jobs, incomes, homes, assets, family, relatives, health, etc., don't take ANY of it for granted and especially don't complain about it, 'cause it can all disappear in the blink of an eye. Give your parents and your kids a hug and tell them you love them, even if they're a pain in the ass. Some of us would give anything to still have that option. It is people and relationships that get you through this life, not money, presents and things. Thus endeth the lecture. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled seasonal celebrations.

 | Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday Toni
Merry Christmas to everyone else!
Tom - check with your house insurance - depending on what your deductable is - you may be able to claim it on the liability portion of the house insurance - which covers things you are transporting in your car! Worth a try anyway! ;-)
Santa doesn't do much around here - but nothing to be sad about - Jesus is the reason for the season and I figure He gave us all a totally awesome gift!
We do mainly small and or home made things at Christmas - and we enjoy the heck out of it and the time we get to spend together!
