SIDON, SOUTH LEBANON, Lebanon, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A Fatah
military official escaped assassination Friday at the Palestinian
refugee camp of Ein el-Hilweh in southern Lebanon, security sources
said.
The sources said Mahmoud Issa, code-named al-Lino, was not
hurt when his former bodyguard opened fire in his direction. Ein
el-Hilweh is the largest of Lebanon's 12 refugee camps which are
outside the control of Lebanese authorities.
The would-be assassin broke away from Fatah several weeks
ago when his brother, who belonged to an Islamic group called Jund
al-Sham, was killed in a clash with Fatah fighters in the camp.
Jund al-Sham is a breakaway faction from the League of
Partisans, which is another Muslim extremist group based in the camp
and which is accused of cooperating with al-Qaida network.
Fatah officials said the camp's police called the Armed
Struggle was looking for the assailant and will hand him over to
Lebanese authorities.
In another incident, a Palestinian was killed when a hand
grenade he was playing with exploded in the camp of al-Tawarek,
which is adjacent to Ein el-Hilweh.
Security sources said two boys were also wounded in the
explosion and were hospitalized.
